ok, i know, its a weird topic, but i have a question about types/ brands of hot dogs. i am usually a label and brand/ nutrition student, but this is one type of food that is lost on me. i tend to gravitate to the organic, all natural types of stuff, so nitrites freak me out and they are found in all “regular” hot dogs and apparently (according to my husband) the nitrate-free ones are gross.
so, help me. we need suggestions. hannah is currently on a hot dog binge (yes, we had hot dogs and blueberry muffins for breakfast) and i can’t bear another day of these things.
ps — forgive me if you like hot dogs, i don’t mean to be offensive to you, i am a recovering vegetarian and can probably count on half a hand the number of times i’ve eaten them…
February 22, 2006 at 12:01 pm #2195AnonymousInactiveWhat about the veggie dogs. They’re an aquired taste, but my daughter who’s never had a real one doesn’t know the difference and likes the Yves brand. Not sure about the preservatives though. Also the texture is kind of funky…like hot dog flavoured sponge.
February 22, 2006 at 12:29 pm #2199AnonymousInactivehello beck! dan LOVES hotdogs and we found a brand that tastes amazing and are wonderfully natural….
http://www.applegatefarms.com/
go to the product pull down and under hotdogs there are chicken, turkey, etc. found these at wild oats.
take care!!!
ps–curiousity has got me wanting an undated picture of the little miss skinny you!!!
February 22, 2006 at 12:38 pm #2202AnonymousInactivehey, don’t they have veggie hot dogs? although frankly those sound gross-lol, I feel for you the only meat my 6 year old will comsume besides chicken is bacon or sausage!!! ( holy high cholesterol right?) I wouldn’t worry about nitrates, shell get tired of hot dogs sonner or later (and may get so sick of them she’ll never touch them again-lol), my son went on a peanut butter sandwich binge from 2-3 and when he hit 4 he told me “mommy peanut butter makes me want to puke!!!” he has finally started eating it again at 6!! and how weird is this?? he’ll eat corndogs but will not touch hotdogs(despite me repeatdly telling him corn dogs ARE hot dogs) Kids are just weird sometimes!!
February 22, 2006 at 2:58 pm #2211AnonymousInactiveBecky, my husband likes the fresh turkey sausages… all natural and no preservatives b/c they’re fresh.
February 22, 2006 at 3:15 pm #2212AnonymousInactivelori: we’ve go a texture diva here, so i am not sure about sausage. if we tell her its what dinosaurs or elephants eat, she might at least try! or if you talk it up for a day before trying something “yum, we;re going to have sausage, elmo eats sausage…” isn’t it funny how things get simoutaneously easier and harder when you hit two?
about the veggie dogs — i am still afraid of soy protein because this is the intolerance that caused hannah’s reflux, without our knowing it for a long time. i will investigate the applegate farms dogs. maybe i’ll try pigs in a blanket, too. i am really scaring myself.
thanks for your input everyone.
February 22, 2006 at 3:16 pm #2213AnonymousInactiveps — gina: no pictures until i can get rid of the other 30 that shouldn’t have been there in the first place. ack!
February 22, 2006 at 7:34 pm #2225hellbenntKeymasterbecky,
what about kosher hot dogs? they probably have nitrates, but they’re all beef…hmm…I’ve even seen a box of kosher pigs in a blanket (LOL! I bet it’s called something else, teehee) at the supermarket…
my neice (she’s 3) lives on tofu pups(!) – I know these are soy based, but just wanted to share that if she could only eat bread, applesauce, annie’s mac n’ cheese and tofu pups she’d be a happy camper
February 22, 2006 at 8:01 pm #2227AnonymousInactiveWe like applegate farms hotdogs too. I asked my regular grocery store to order them for me and they were happy to do it! I’m a hog dog lover and these applegate farms ones are good. Especially the beef ones.
February 22, 2006 at 8:40 pm #2230AnonymousInactiveWe do either the applegate farms beef (at trader joes, and I think whole foods) or hebrew national kosher – they do have nitrites, but no “scary bits”. Oddly enough, all my kids will eat the organic chicken sausages – even the ian’s spinach and feta. james won’t eat any “real meat” texture, like small pieces of chicken or steak. He’ll only eat “crumbly” meat like hot dog, sausage, meatballs, etc. And ketchup helps a lot. Although just the other day I was eating a slice of applegate farms smoked turkey rolled up like a tube, and he took it from me and ate it. it was sliced very thin, so does sort of crumble nicely. He lived on it from about 10 to 18 months, but hadn’t touched it since then…odd little creatures.
February 24, 2006 at 11:32 am #2346AnonymousInactivetricia: sounds like james likes “meat product,” ha ha ha.
thanks for the suggestions. this is truely unchartered meat territory for me, but we broke out the applegate farms for breakfast (for a nutritious eggs and hot dog breakfast) and they passed the picky girlio test.
incidently, i wanted to share that hannah is finally eating like a real toddler! hot dogs, juice, cupcakes…all stuff that would make her gag before are her favorites. and brocolli in its unadulterated form, too. we’ll see how long this lasts…

March 28, 2006 at 12:52 pm #4823AnonymousInactiveAt what age is it safe to give hot dogs and what is the best way to cook the “nutritious” (applegate farm) ones?
I also saw a brand called Welshire Kids at Whole Foods that were nitrate and preservative free. I think they were chicken. Has anyone tried this brand?
March 28, 2006 at 1:08 pm #4827AnonymousInactiveHi Tiffany –
Owen’s been getting veggie hot dogs at day care since he started at his new place, so that was right about at one year. I know those tend to be a little more mushy than regular hot dogs but I’m not sure how they feed them to him or cook them. I’ll ask when I pick him up today for you!
