Inactivewe have someone come once a week also. then we “maintain” in between visits. like laura and her husband, we are also pile-ers.
as far as your husband goes, i’d love to hear what he’d say on the issue if her were at home part time/ working part time. my husband is a SAHD and let me tell you, there was no hesitation on his part when we went to once a week instead of every other week.
ps — its cheaper if you don’t have a service, but find someone your friends or neighbors use. with merry maids our old 1800 sq foot house cost $120 to clean. our new house is 2900 sq feet and we have an awesome woman for $70…

InactiveDH is actually cleaner than I am- I’m the pack-rat around here- he’s super organized and likes everything tidy. He will clean up, but has no idea HOW to clean! He says (and I’m embarrased for him, b/c he sounds like an idiot) “My favourite cleaner is some warm water and a paper towel!”…. yes, I know….
Then on the other side of the spectrum, he wants to put those poisonous toilet pucks into all our toilet tanks so that we “don’t need to clean the toilets.” I told him I’d personally kill him if he did it, because it’s a major safety hazard for the kids! He still tries to push that one. He also doesn’t believe me that you need to wash baseboards otherwise they get dirty!
Anyhow, if I can find an affordable cleaning person, he’s finally agreed to let someone come in every 2 months. Do you think that’s often enough?

InactiveOh ya, he has this nasty habit of stirring his coffee and leaving the spoon in the sink. He also never washes the sink, and thinks it’s fine to leave food bits in there (which is my pet peeve). So our sink is perpetually brown around the drain. Yesterday I actually scrubbed it clean, and it took me quite a while. When he came home and I pointed it out, he said “How did you do that? I tried it with a paper towel a few times and it wouldn’t come off.” I thought is this guy for real??? Has he never heard of chlorox and a sponge!!!!

InactiveI would push for every two weeks if you can afford it…heck push for every week if you can afford it
. My DH was so against our maids at first…now he loves it!February 13, 2007 at 2:10 pm #24800Anonymous
InactiveThanks Emily. Every 2 weeks will definitely be a no-go! Maybe every month, I’ll have to see. I plan to do up-keep in between, so definitely don’t think we need it every two weeks (though I’m sure it would be nice).
BTW, sorry about the dh rants…

InactiveLori…if you can’t do dh rant to your cyber friends who can you rant to…

I hope you get your cleaning lady once a month!

InactiveWe used to have someone come in once a month to do the heavy duty stuff like mopping, deep cleaning the bathrooms, dusting, etc. It was a big help. We stopped doing it when I went part-time since I naively thought I would have time if I were home more
… Needless to say, the house never looked worse. Not only did I not get to clean but we were home more messing things up. Now that I am back full-time, I am seriously thinking of having someone come again. I think ideally twice a month would be really good but I say do whatever you can. Once every two months is better than nothing!I do want to say though, if they come when you are not home, make sure you safeguard all of your personal info., identity theft is real!! We for the most part used a lady we knew and I was totally comfortable with her being there but when we did use one of the maid chain services, I would not let them clean our office. Ok, I am a little paranoid……

InactiveLori,
You are a better woman than me…no matter how hard I try, I just can’t keep my house clean.
But you know, once a month is better than never. Then at least you don’t feel like you have to get on your hands and knees and scrub. I agree with finding someone you trust. We love our cleaning ladies…February 14, 2007 at 2:01 pm #24884Anonymous
InactiveWe do once a month and it is a lifesaver. They clean the house top to bottom including ceiling fans, baseboards, window sills, etc.. I would love every other week, or every week for that matter, but I am too cheap. It was worse when Cody was with us because we had dog hair and had to sweep every day, but now that he is gone
the house stays much cleaner. We don’t have a lot of stuff out and my counters are clear of all clutter, so it is easy to maintain in between.February 16, 2007 at 4:15 pm #25067Anonymous
Inactivelori—-what about hiring a teenage girl to come in and do cleaning? it would probably be cheaper than a housecleaning service. my sister used to occasionally get paid to go and help do cleaning for someone in our church when we were teenagers. maybe your husband would go for that? i wouldn’t mind having someone come in and clean my bathrooms once a week. my kids do not clean well (i’m sure that is my fault—i don’t follow through well enough with them). i don’t think i have had any of my kids do a really decent job cleaning the bathrooms since my step-daughter went to college, but i do think that my kids would do a better job of cleaning if they were doing it for someone else and getting paid.
personally, i want someone to come and cook for me.

Keymasteroh ! I hear you on the cooking!!
when I go back to work I’m looking for a babysitter/nanny for Ari (Jonah goes to preschool) and believe me, cooking is on my list, LOL!!

InactiveChristine, with so many kids I can only imagine that cooking must feel like running a restaurant sometimes! (I’m not a big fan either, but at least I only have the four of us to feed.)

InactiveYeah, I wish I could hire someone to cook. I just hate it. My dh is so darn picky. I’d love to pay someone else to cook and let him complain to her about it.
