InactiveI am giving Prevacid to my son who is 5 weeks. I have read a number of post and articles so I can determine if the Prevacid is working but still haven’t found an answer. For those of you who are giving Prevacid to your children – how did you know it was working? What symptoms disappeared? He has been on it for over a week but still arches, gags, coughs, grunts, and spits up. He has yet to have a problem with feeding and doesn’t cry during or after a feeding. From the articles I have read the poor feeding and crying seem to be the only symptoms that went away.

InactiveMost moms see a decrease in the crying, and all the reflux symptoms. If there are feeding problems, you may see this improve. But the spitting up will still be there. It may take up to 3 weeks to see an improvement. Also, the dose needs to be high enough, and it needs to be given or prepared correctly. What form/dose are you giving, and how are you giving it? InactiveMy daughter was on PRevacid solutabs and the arching, screaming, feeding problems, painful spitup went away. She still spit up A LOT until about 9 months, but it was obviously not painful for her. We initially saw some symptoms go away or decrease, but until your little one is on a good enough dose, it won’t all go away. My little girl had to be on 30mg of Prevacid/day (3 doses of about 10mg each) and on Neocate (she was also MSPI) before she became a happy baby. If you’re giving your little one the solutabs, it must be on an empty stomach (about 1-2 hours after a feeding) and 30-60 minutes before a feeding for it to work correctly.
Hope this helps and that Prevacid can help your little one too. If it doesn’t (it did not help my son), know there are several other options out there to try, and just keep at it until your little one gets relief. Good luck!

InactiveMy son did wonderfully on prevacid (solutabs 30mg/day 15 in a.m. and 15 in pm) in addition to Nutramigen (MSPI). We saw less crying and more happiness. Our biggest issue was his constant crying and horrible sleep. His sleep wasn’t great until he was over 1 yr old, but it was so much better once he was on the right dose of prevacid and Nutramigen. But like Denise said if it doesn’t work there are a ton of other options available. And like Lori said it can take sometime to see results. I think it took us a good 2wks to see a big difference.

InactiveHe is taking the solutabs at 15mg a day (7.5 in morning and 7.5 in the evening). I am giving it to him in a syringe 1- 1 1/2 hours after a feeding and waiting 30 minutes to feed him again. I put 1 tsp of water in the syringe with the 7.5 mg solutab half.

InactiveIf your baby is out of pain, then yes, the med is working. We still had unbelieveable spit up, but my baby didn’t fight eating and didn’t scream for hours on end anymore. They also slept better when we got the right combination of meds/formula. I would say if your baby is still arching and from pain, not from just wanting to get away (I remember that, too 🙂 ) then if there is pain, I would explore a higher dose, but if not in pain, then you are doing great!
