How long does it take?

I was just wondering how long it takes for Zantac to start working? My daughter is 2 weeks old and was just put on .45 ml twice a day. She has been on the medication for about 48 hours with no improvment. Is it to early for me to take her back in? I just want her to be comfortable and the Zantac almost seems to make it worse. Thanks

zantac has alcohol in it which can really burn a sore esophogus. i really dont get why doctors choose that over pepcid, tagament, or axid for an h2 blocker. that said, h2 blockers should work quickly if they are going to work….meaning, many babies on here did not get relief on h2 blockers and needed PPI’s like prevacid or zegerid. PPI’s are more effective medicines for treating gerd, because with h2 blockers you build a tolerance to them and they stop working. you can read about treatments at marci-kids.com, which is the midwest acid reflux childrens institute. many of us have had to share that research with our doctors in order to get proper PPI treamtment. once my son was started on the correct dose of prevacid he was a different baby!

thank you for the information and the website. I am not sure what MSPI is – sorry. She is breast fed. My older daughter was on Zantac and did really well with it at first but eventually ended up on prilosec.

milk/soy protein intolerant, sorry! many relfux babies cannot handle milk or soy protein in any form. for my son, it REALLY aggrivates his reflux-to the point where it was as if he was on no med at all (even though he was on a high dose of zegerid( which is prilosec). he needs to be on a completely milk and soy free formula, otherwise his reflux and pain is out of control. i know many moms on here are breastfeeding and are on milk and soy free diets. just something to think about.

Yes my oldest daughter also had reflux and is allergic to milk. So when I started having problems this time around the first thing I did was remove dairy from my diet. But it doesn’t seem to make any difference. I am going to call my Dr. tomorrow and push to get refered to a GI specialist. I think that would help everything. I read about Zantac on the website you suggested. It actully answered alot of my questions – from this time and last time! Thanks again

I would give the Zantac a good week before you throw in the towel. It does work for some babies and since you have started treating at such a young age hopefully it can do the trick. It worked okay for Cooper, but we did have to go to Prevacid after 3 wks of Zantac, keep in mind that the dose for Zantac is wt sensitive and as the baby gains wt the dose does need to be increased. I wish you luck and hope that things go smoothly.

I don’t know much about the elimination diet, but that might be something else to try. Our doctor told us that you should see some improvement after a couple of days on the zantac if it’s going to work. I can’t tell you whether or not it helped Hailey at all, b/c she could smell it coming as soon as I opened the bottle, and it was impossible to get her to take it. Good luck. If you don’t see any improvement soon, I’d ask about a PPI. Prevacid tastes better than prilosec, just in case you’re going to talk to the doc about a PPI>
