How long does teething pain last?

My daughter is getting her first tooth. I couldn’t figure out why she kept pulling off the bottle 5 days ago, and then the next day I felt the sharp little tooth poking through her gums. It is still just barely poking through, although it grows a little each day (she chews on my fingers, so I know this for a fact!) You can barely see it when you look at her gums though. She has been increasingly fussy and having trouble sleeping. The nurse at my dr’s office said the tooth should come all the way through in 2-3 days and she’ll feel better. But since I felt it 4 days ago, shouldn’t it be “through” the gums now? Why doesn’t she feel any better? (I’m giving her Tylenol and Orajel and they help minimally).

Just wondered how long it has taken your babies to “get over” the teething pain. I know I’m overprotective, but I keep thinking that if the tooth has poked through and she’s still this fussy, maybe I need to get her ears checked for an ear infection. I hate to sit around blaming the teeth when something else might be the problem! Since she’s my first baby, I don’t really know what it means to have the tooth “poke through” and at what point she should feel better.

Hello. Emma is getting ready to pop her 5th tooth in 3 months. I don’t mean to scare you but some babies take forever to teeth like my little one and I have had the same thoughts as you. The 2 bottom teeth came through OK. I could tell she was teething by the crankyness but they took about 2 weeks. The two top teeth took over a month to come through. When they “Poke through” it looks like a canker sore so to speak. It has actually broke the skin. As soon as one of Emma’s teeth break through she feels better the same day, less crankness. The closer it gets to coming through the more miserable she is. Emma is up literally every 3-4 hours at that point. If you can feel the sharpness of the tooth and she is still cranky I would think it might be something else. I hope others chim in because that is only my experience. I also notice that Tylenol does nothing for emma, I give her infant motrin. It seems to help alot more. Also in the midst of teething she also had a urinary tract infection and I never knew so if your instints tell you something else might be wrong it doesn’t hurt to get it checked out!!

Kaelyn generally seemed uncomfortable until the entire top part of the tooth came in. In her case that took anywhere from a day to a week (depending on the tooth). If you can’t really see the tooth yet, then I’d say there is a good chance that she is still having teething pain.

I took her to the dr yesterday and they said the tooth still has quite a ways to go, so that explains the pain, plus they think she is also getting the other bottom tooth as well. So she’s on a schedule of Tylenol all day and Motrin at night. The medicines help somewhat, but she is still whiney all day.

For about 2 weeks now, she will not nap more than a 1/2 hour at a time. She used to nap for about 2-3 hours in the swing. Now, no matter where I lay her down, she is up in a 1/2 hour. Do you try to get your baby back to sleep, or just accept the short nap and move on? I try to get her back to sleep, but end up wasting about another hour doing this. How frustrating! She is cranky because she’s tired (and because of the teeth, I know) and there’s nothing I can do about it.
