InactiveI would also call the Dr. that prescribed the meds and see what he thinks…sometimes Dr.s are good for some things.
(totally joking, my dad actually is a dr…don’t throw tomatoes, he is a orthopedic surgeon and stays up to date on current medications I promise!)April 23, 2007 at 3:10 pm #31245Anonymous
InactiveI agree with Emily. Check with your doctor. It was safe for me to breastfeed while on an antibiotic for an ear infection, but the dr. totally researched it before giving it to me. I did take probiotics though while on it, hoping that they would get into his system as well.

InactiveI was on an antibiotic while BF Carson. I asked the doc that prescribed the antibiotic to me and also Carson’s doctor. Both said it was fine. The antibiotic I was on was: Suprax – I believe. I ate a lot of yougurt and even more when on an antibiotic. I also would give probiotics to Kendra. They should be good for her now and when you aren’t on the antibiotic!

InactiveDo you remember the name of the antibiotic? Most antibiotics have cleared your system (and breastmilk) within a matter of days, and many are safe to take while breastfeeding. If you recall the name, I can check my Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation reference for you. (I’m a pharmacist – don’t throw tomatoes at me either!!

InactiveHi evreyone,
thank for all the replies. I started giving her BM yesterday and she seem to be doing ok. her poos are loose, but i think is from the milk and not the antibiotic.
Sheri,
the name of the antibiotic is Levaquin. thanks ahead. don’t worry not tomatoes to throw at you

Keymasterquestion: is a doctor correct to tell a mother taking antibiotics not to breastfeed?
April 26, 2007 at 8:56 am #31496Anonymous
InactiveLaura,
the doctor did not tell to stop breasfeeding. i was also on 3 other meds to treat severe allergies symptons, cough med, neb treatment. i felt i did not wnat my baby bombarded with all that and i did the pump dumb thing (heartbreaking i know). The antibiotic was the longest treament.
to answer your question, i guess it depends on the side effects. the literature about this particular antibiotic and its side effects were not very plesant and i got several of it. so that’s why i did not give my milk to my baby.

InactiveLeo, you did the best thing when you stopped nursing while on Levaquin. It belongs to a class of drugs known as fluoroquinolones, and these are some of the only antibiotics that are known to be unsafe in children. It has been shown that fluoroquinolones do cross over into the breast milk, and are not recommended in nursing mothers, unless the mother “pumps and dumps”. However, don’t worry as the Levaquin should certainly be out of your breast milk by now, as it usually has cleared the body completely within about 3 days (after the last dose).
For all nursing mothers, I recommend always telling the pharmacist that you are nursing when you get a prescription filled. While we may not know off the top of our head if the drug is OK while nursing or not, we have the references to check for you right away.
