InactiveWhat is the best/most effective way for me to give omeprazole capsules to a breastfed 4 week old? I’m assuming I need to empty the capsules, maybe into a liquid and syringe it?
Thank you for your help.July 22, 2010 at 8:30 pm #66767hellbennt
Keymasteryou need to give on an empty stomach
then you open up the capsule to get the ‘beads’
then you give the beads w/ a tsp of applesauce(on empty stomach)
a 4wk old is young, but you can use your finger w/ the applesauce and beads and wash down w/ a syringe of water- it is do-able
you need the applesauce (not apple juice for some reason) because of the acidity
then you need to wait half an hour and breast feedthis is an ok solution but you might just want to order Bufferbabies (maybe you’re just waiting for it to come) so that you can give at any time (don’t have to give on an empty stomach and don’t have to wait to feed baby)

InactiveI used to use pureed pears (but you can use applesauce too- just make sure it doesn’t have any other ingredients – ie: corn syrup, sugar, etc)… put 1/2-1 tsp in a medicine cup (so VERY little) & sprinkle the beads from the capsule on top, then lay baby on his back & spoon in little by little. I did this w/ my ds starting @ 3-4 wks old. Make sure you’re timing though like Laura said!

InactiveWow, I have a hard time imagining giving applesauce to such a small baby, but I’m happy to hear that it can be done.
I will have to look into the bufferbabies. Our doseage of omeprazole isn’t on the website, so I’ll have to call refluxsolutions and see what I should do.July 23, 2010 at 11:43 am #66780Anonymous
InactiveJust fwiw, I eventually changed to bufferbabies, then later to solutabs (when ds#2 finally tolerated them around 9 mths).
I did Zegerid from the get-go w/ ds#3 (& ds#2 on it too now) b/c ds#2 is now intolerant to pears & allergist says it could (probably) be b/c he was exposed to them so early…. SO, just something to consider. Don’t want to discourage you but wanted to give all the facts too. I’m sure most dbs aren’t this sensitive.

InactiveI have to say that the omeprazole capsules taste absolutely awful! I would personally try prevacid in buffer babies. We did prevacid in caracream, which worked best for us. I also wouldn’t want to introduce solids, even if in such a small amount, at such a young age if you can help it.

InactiveThanks for your thoughts on this. I called Refluxsolutions lab yesterday but I had to leave a message and didn’t hear back. Hopefully next week I will hear from them and can figure something out with the bufferbabies.
