InactiveSo I finally got the doctor to prescribe the Zegerid and I think it may actually be working. My last hurdle to get over is how to get DD to take it. It’s so thick and nasty tasting and there’s so much of it that she invariably chokes on it. I take my time and give it in small little increments but she cries so much that I think she inhales some of it and chokes. Very disturbing when it happens. Anyone have any advice??

InactiveI had the same problem with my son. He hates the taste of Zegerid and I can’t get him to take it. So, I’m sticking with Prevacid for now even though I really would prefer to have him on Zegerid.
My son has done that choking and inhaling meds thing and it scares the heck out of me.
My pharmacist said there are flavoring agents you can use for Zegerid, but I don’t know much about them. I’d check with Joel about that first because you want to make sure any additives don’t have a negative effect of the effectiveness of the drug.
My son takes Prevacid fine but when I have to give him other things I’ve learned a trick that seems to work. I put the medicine in a tiny medicine cup and then add a tiny bit of cereal to thicken it. Then I feed it to him with a spoon. He takes it better that way and it’s harder to spit out when it’s thickened. Also, whatever comes out of the mouth you can scoop back up with the spoon and push back in – just like when you feed them solids.
I’m pretty sure Joel said you can add Zegerid to milk or formula. Perhaps you can add it to a little of her formula in her bottle and see if she will take it that way. I’d just use 1/2 ounce or so, to make sure she drinks it all.
I’m so happy to hear that the medicine is working already
I hope you have better luck in getting her to take her medicine soon!April 14, 2006 at 10:22 pm #6149Anonymous
InactiveYou could add a little formula to it and see if you can get the baby to take it that way. The bad thing about adding it to a whole bottle is making sure you give the whole bottle. Joel said one time that you could add it to certain foods also. I would talk with him and see what he says.

InactiveWe have had great results putting the Zegerid in approximately 1 ounce of formula in a seperate bottle. Our daughter loves the taste so much that I have to take the nipple off of the medicine bottle to put it onto her regular bottle after her medicine. Also, by giving the Zegerid in such a small amount, usually she is so hungry, she sucks it right down.
Hope it works for you!!

InactiveI tried the medicine in her formula trick but she didn’t like the taste of it, thanks anyway. Oh well, hopefully she’ll get used to taking it so she won’t cry so much. She’s been on this dose (21 mg/day split into 3 doses) for 6 days now. Before this she was on Prevacid for two weeks but it didn’t work. It seems like one day she’ll do pretty well (17-18 oz.) and then the next day not so good (10-12 oz.). Anyone know why all the back and forth? Do you think we’ll start to have more good days than bad?

InactiveI’d like to know if you can mix it in some rice cereal. I doubt my son would take it out of a bottle.

InactiveSaucy,
I checked with Dr Phillips on your question, and he said that it would be fine to mix the Zegerid with the rice cereal, since it has a pretty neutral pH.

InactiveNo problem. Let me know if that works out for you, and I will suggest it to others as well.

InactiveI’m still trying to get a prescription worked out from our military providers over here in Germany, but I’m working on it.
I’m curious–about how many milliliters/teaspoons do you wind up having to give an average baby? I’ve had enough trouble with 2.5 ml of Zantac, so I’m getting nervous about this.

Keymasterzantac tastes nasty (you can mix it with mylanta cherry supreme to mask the taste: Tips about Zantac & Mylanta: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=149&am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;am p;KW=michelle)
and zegerid, I’ve read, is fruity…this might make all the difference in the world
– also, since you’re in Germany you can get caracream- this tastes like a yogurt/white chocolate covered pretzel (yes I tasted it
) -yummmm -
