How to soothe a baby with Acid Reflux

Hello Everyone!!

My son will 2 months old and was diagnosed with Acid Reflux when he was 2 weeks old. His doctor switched his formula to Similac Sensitive with R.S. and gave him a prescription for Zantac every 12 hours. This seemed to work, but I noticed that he was always gassy and very fussy. We went back to the doctor recently and she changed his formula to Enfamil Nutramigen Lipil (which is lactose free) and prescribed Prevacid. My son is stll very gassy and is constantly crying. I have tried everything from the Mylcon drops to gripe water to propping him at a 30 degree angel when he eats and sleeps and NOTHING works. It gets frustrating because I know he is in pain and I cannot help him.’

Does anyone know how I can help to soothe him when he cries?? PLEASE HELP

Does your LO have any signs of MSPI(milk/soy protein intolerance)? If so, then I’d say he needs an elemental formula. What are his stools like? Also, I’d say his dose is way too low. Have you considered switching to a PPI? That or even increasing his current zantac dose. Zantac is weight sensitive & so as your LO gains weight it needs to be increased. Also, babies have faster metabolisms and 1 dose/day is NOT enough to help. HTH!

http://www.marci-kids.com is at the FOREFRONT of research of PPI (prevacid, prilosec, protonix, nexium) use and dosing in infants/todders. You might want to start there to find proper PPI dose and then, hop back here to learn HOW to get that proper dose, and what FORM of PPI and HOW to administer…

unfortunately the majority of drs & pharmacists don’t know…babies metabolisms’ are much faster than adults, so the drugs work differently with them…

after medication, you might then want to look at diet…

Hi dear I understand you, WE HAVE 6 MONTHS DEALING WITH THIS PAINFULL AND FRUSTRATING THING,my best advice take it to a specialist dont let the pediatrician treat

it, if they put your baby in medication make sure when gain weight increase the dosage, they are very sensitive to that. My baby is taken nutramigen formula, she is also allergic to milk.

Hang in there you are not alone, i know is the worse feeling in the world see your baby suffering and cant help it . keep in touch!

Same story here, but the Nutramigen seems to help some as does the Prevacid, but he is still very colicky. I have to say keeping him in a peanut shell does the trick, even though I end up holding him all day, he seems more comfortable.

interesting article…but i just meant colicky in behavior. he defiantly has GERD and a milk allergy. i think i will forward this on to everyone who tries to tell me he is just colic 🙂

I am holding my baby all day long, my arms are very tired and she doesnt like any other thing, I bougth a book yesterday and I wish read it before its great ” the happiests baby on the block” I will recomend anyboby with gerd , colic or just crying babies to get it.

We went through the same thing with our ds. We went to a specialist and she told us that we needed to learn how to sooth our crying baby–very frustrating when you know your baby is hurting! We ended up on Nutramigen Lipil ready to fead formula, and thickening it every time with beechnut oatmeal(It is easier on their stomach) and giving the prevacid twice a day. We stopped the zantac b/c it didn’t seem to help him at all.

We also propped his mattress at an angle on one end and he slept on his tummy for the first few months… now that he can turn over, he’ll sleep any way he lays.

You can also try mylanta supreme and add a little to each bottle–that didn’t seem to help our little guy, but worth a shot.

I also recommend reading the happiest baby on the block–wish I had found it sooner!

try baby sling – carry him around – that helps him and your sanity

we had great improvement once baby put on neocate lcp (formula) and we gave up breatsfeeding

My little girl has this same problem with the gas. I have a Baby Bjorn, but she doesn’t seem to really like it. I’ve thought about getting a sling, but since my daughter is 4 1/2 months, I’m not sure if it is worth it. Until what age/weight can you carry them in a sling?
