InactiveCurrent problem: Noah pretty much won’t eat. He’s taking about 12 ounces a day, and he’s lost a pound in the last few weeks.
History: Noah is 10 months old, 2 month premature. He had silent reflux when he was younger and colic, that turned into bottle refusal that I could kind of work with him to ge thim over for a while…get him to sleep, then he would eat. Things got worse and worse….ER visits for hydration…all the while he was on prevacid 15 mg solutab and zantac. I’d let him suck a tums smoothie sometimes before bottles and that would help. Then, it got so bad they switched him to Neocate, which helped after about a week and a half. He started drinking without problems….but the problems came back. Switched to Elecare, and started adding 1 tablespoon of beechnut rice per ounce…..he started eating easier again. For maybe 2 months he was easier to feed….took enough, more predictible…sometimes would take a bottle awake. Sometimes you’d have to put him to sleep.
I don’t know what happened. He’s not taking any foods for fear of MSPI….(every time I gave him a first food his bottle aversion would get worse…also he hates to eat so I’m not forcing it right now. I feel like I violate his mouth way too much as it is.) Also….he’s been doing a lot of vomiting whole feeds off and on for the past few months. It had sort of slowed down but now its back. Even though he doesn’t eat much and will go long times (like 16 hours) between bottles. He gets 4 ounces at a time offered. Usually takes less. Always in his sleep for the past few weeks. He also seems agitated and restless a lot of the time. Can’t sit still and always whining. While he was doing well for a while….it was really nice because he played on his own and seemed happy. Not anymore. But he doesn’t have a full oral aversion because he loves mouth kissing and sometimes we play games where I tap his tongue and he laughs.
Current routine: 26 cal per ounce elecare, 1/4 cup beechnut rice. He gets 25 mg of zegerid a day which I give with mylanta cherry supreme on an empty stomach. He will gag if he doesn’t have some ppi in him for a while before food. When he seems bad, I give him zantac in the middle of the night. He also get erythromycin in his bottles for delayed emptying. He’s never had a test to confirm he has that though. Lastly- I mix a little ginger root in every bottle because I read that increases motility and helps with nausea (he really seems nauseated a lot). We did see improvement after we started the ginger for some time so I don’t think that’s a bad thing. He sleeps on a 45 degree angle.
Seriously though. He’s never really eaten less than this. He’s loosing weight. It seems like his reflux might not be under control, but I’m wondering how that can be. Some days he whines so much that I have to hold him all day. And that is really hard because he’s a twin. I seriously don’t know what to do. Please help!
Also- I’ve been stalking for a while. I’m new. My name is Austin, I’m 24, and I have twin boys to whom I am a prisoner.

Keymasterausti86… not that this matters very much, as my LO wasn’t exactly like this, but it’s a thought… where do you live? Cold weather? Flu season? Stomach flu? Once I mistakenly thought that my lo was having a reflux flare with the vomitting… it turned out to be the nasty stomach flu. 48 hours of vomitting and food refusal. Very scary. Will LO take pedialyte? flavored or plain? Ear infection? Asthma episodes? I’m certain others will weigh in here as there is more experience than me. Hang in there.

InactiveHi Austin,
I’m so sorry to hear about all the trouble you’re having with Noah. Poor little guy!For how long of a period has he gone in the past without having these severe symptoms? During that period or periods, are there any commonalities that come to mind? How much does he weigh? The problems sound pretty severe – why isn’t the dr. doing any testing?Take Care!NatalieJanuary 18, 2011 at 4:35 pm #67652Anonymous
Inactivesounds like it’s time for testing—i agree with natalie–i wonder why the doc hasn’t suggested it yet—especially with the weight loss.
