InactiveI have a 6 month old boy and we have been going through the whole colic reflux thing since he was 6 weeks old. Our doctor has placed him on reglin, zantac, and and now he’s on prevacid but the fassiness and spitting up is still going on, but recently it has been getting a lot worse especially when he is sitting. Do you think him being able to sit now is causeing him to spit up more?
Has anyone found one medicine to work better then the other?

InactiveMy doctor told me that sitting up and crawling can actually make reflux worse for some babies…I guess with all the pressure on thier little tummies. Brianna is walking now, but I do notice that when she sits down for a long time right after having a meal (like oon the floor looking at books) sometimes she will have a little spit up. 🙂
We found the prevacid to be the best..i think I have read here that a lot of people found it took 2 weeks to have the meds kick in, so maybe just a bit more time…or maybe a higher does…how much prevacid is he on?
Good luck!

InactiveHi and welcome to the site. I’m sorry that you’re going through such a rough time with your son. Many people have found that the reflux started to get better when they were able to sit up, but others have found the opposite- that the pressure on the tummy made the spitting up worse. So I guess it depends on the child.
How much prevacid is he on and how are you giving it to him? If it’s the solutab are you trying to give it on an empty stomach and follow it up with a meal 30 minutes later? That’s the best way to give it. The meal activates the drug.
How many times a day is he spitting up? Is the fussiness directly related to the vomitting? Prevacid will stop the acid production, but isn’t intended to stop the vomitting, unfortunately.
Is he on formula or breast milk? Have you considered milk/soy protein intolerance (MSPI)? Sometimes MSPI causes reflux-like symptoms, and many babies have found relief by removing the offenders from their diet.
You might want to check out Laura’s intro (stickied under the introduce yourself forum). It’s full of all kinds of great info.
Welcome again. I hope that your son finds some relief soon.

InactiveI would recommend you do a search on the internet about reglan side effects. If your child hasn’t been tested for DGE (delayed gastric empting) then he probably shouldn’t be on reglan. JUST MY OPINION

Inactiveyep, i found the prevacid solutabs and capsules worked much better than the suspension..and i did hear the same about the reglan and it can make some babies cranky

Groupie Intro: my intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&am p;PN=1&TPN=1reglan and zantac seem to be the first meds prescribed by peds, “Just Because.” It’s probably just what they were taught and that’s that. Jonah was even prescribed reglan in the nicu and they had DONE testing and they pretty much knew he didn’t have DGE. Personally, in retrospect, I think they gave it to him to cover their butts legally- he was having apnea episodes (stopped breathing) and rather than have a dead newborn on their hands, they figured the possible risks of reglan, and the help it MIGHT provide, sure outweighed the apnea episodes.
anyway, there’s a lot of bad hype about reglan, but it has worked wonders for some babies, with diagnosed/VERIFIED DGE, in small doses. there ARE other motility drugs out there such as bethanecol (sp?) and erythromyacin (sp?)…I feel that if a baby has been given the stomach emptying scan (this is not just an Upper GI– it’s a specific test looking for DGE) and doesn’t respond well to other drugs, then by all means trying reglan is worth it…

Inactivei wouldnt even bother with reglan( can have some serious neurological sideffects) or zantac.
go straight to the PPI and make sure the dosing is adequate. you can go to marci-kids.com and read the dosing info as most docotrs underdose PPI”.s
its also improtant that you are administering the prevacid correctly, if you are using a compound it has to be made certain way, and if you are using other forms you have to time them with meals and give on an empty stomach.November 14, 2006 at 9:03 pm #18056Anonymous
InactiveHello and welcome,
I agree with Natalia…having been through this twice…I’d suggest making sure his Prevacid dose is adequate, as many doctors under dose. Zantac never worked for my first refluxer and my son suffered on a too low dose of Prevacid for longer than I care to remember. I was able to convince his doctor to raise his dose by sharing the http://www.marci-kids.com info with her.
As for the amount of spitting up, for my son it varied greatly week to week. Some days or weeks he spit up huge amts all day long, and other days or weeks it would be much less. I never could find any reasons for the changes. The important thing is that once he was on the right dose of Prevacid he was no longer in pain.
I would be cautious about Reglan for the same reasons the others have stated. It’s not even meant to treat reflux…it’s meant to treat DGE, and it can have serious neurological side effects in some infants. My son’s doctor prefers not to test for or treat DGE unless there is a weight gain issue because of the potential side effects of these drugs.
Well I’m glad you found us and I hope your son is feeling better soon.

InactiveIs it possible your baby is teething? I have always heard that sitting up makes the reflux better, but then again all babies are different.
As far as medicines go. Zegerid has worked wonders for my little guy. He doesn’t sleep well, but at least he’s happy and doesn’t seem to be in any pain. I recently tryed to take him off his meds and boy I know now how well they truly are working. Zegerid is probably the most expensive, but you can get a coupon on the zegerid website and also check around to different pharmacies. I would check different pharmacies no matter what med you use. We get our meds. at Sams club and it is 60 dollars cheaper than getting it at wal greens and sams will take the coupon. The 60 dollar difference by the way is before the coupon so really the difference is 80 dollars.
Good luck.
