i don’t think this med is working :(

Hi everyone….Julia is on 1.6 of Axid 2x’s per day…and I don’t think it’s working…they just upped the dose a week ago, but she’s been up at night, and squirming, and throwing her head back, and arching her back….and she has this hoarse voice she talks in now and then (we call it her little old man voice…not sure if it’s relevant), and she also started groaning like she’s in pain almost like she’s trying to poop but she’s not pushing, and pulling off of the breast again…

I think I’m calling the dr AGAIN today, because I really don’t think it’s working…any advice??? Or any advice for dealing with the dr? So far, the dr. has been pretty good about the reflux (as soon as I suspected she had it, he put her on meds, whereas my old dr made me wait months with my 1st daughter until it was unbearable for her)….thanks 🙂

faxing always worked for me- much better than the phone- it’s a way to get your thoughts out clearly & consisely & matter-of-factly. It’s a way to make sure the doctor sees it and you’re not just brushed off by someone in the office. I would simply fax the dr and thank her/him- list all the reasons. Next, you are just going to make statements- (no feelings)…State your baby’s weight. state current axid dose. state SANDIFER SYMPTOMS- this is arching of the back- there are references from my welcome/intro…state all other symptoms. then state you’d like a referral to a ped GI ASAP, thank you. Tell her/him in the meantime what you expect/request: ie, prescription for prevacid & how much, etc. tell her/him how to reach you. THANK HER/him. Call the office & let them know fax is sent. Call again to folow up later

If you have time before your appointment print the information from http://www.marci-kids.com and try to get your little on on a good dose of a PPI like Prevacid or Zegerid. Most of our babies don’t get adequate or lasting relief from H2 Blockers like Pepcid or Zantac. And doctors tend to underdose PPI’s so bringing along the marci-kids info may help you to get a high enough dose and more than one dose per day. Most babies do best on three doses, but even two is better than one.

i agree wtih ndrose-h2 blockers never helped my son-he needed a high dose of PPI to help him with his pain.

so i’m back from the dr’s, and they won’t prescribe anything else until shes 6 mos old….they want me to feed her rice cereal…………..hope it helps to get this child to sleep…..i’m not real thrilled right now!

Poor sweetie. Aren’t they even the least bit concerned about her hoarse voice? They can’t blame that on colic! I’d start looking for another doctor. I doubt the rice is going to help much.

As a last ditch effort with this particular doctor you can try faxing a letter (after a few days if you don’t see any change with the rice) stating her symptoms and requesting to please be able to try a PPI medication for her.

Just another idea. I didn’t do this, but I know that I have read posts here where Dr. Phillips has called/e-mailed or someonw communicated with the Dr.s if your won’t budge??? Good luck!

dr phillips callled our ped after i emailed him. she had never prescribe a PPI to a baby-though she was very willing, she just had no idea what the dosing would be, and she said none of her pediatric books had that information. he called her and we got put on a nice high dose of zegerid and Trace has been a happy baby ever since!

I remember eveyone telling me to find another Dr. too and I felt like oh things will just get better. Well, I have to tell you they won’t. Sorry, I know that sounds bad, but I want your baby to get help as soon as possible. You have to push to get your baby help. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is. I was one of the lucky ones that Dr. Phillips called my sons Dr. She just was not willing to budge until he talked to her. Once he did though, she did exactly what he said. Before that I took the Marci-kids info into her and she just glanced at it and said she knew what she was doing. She didn’t know what she was doing because if she did I don’t think she would’ve done what Dr Phillips told her to do. Okay, too much info. What I am telling you is bug your dr. Call, and fax until you just can’t do it anymore. Call on bad days when your baby is crying or you are crying. If your dr still won’t budge after all that then find another Dr. Don’t worry about them getting upset with you. I made that mistake and it took a long time for Justice to get help. You are paying the dr. they should be helping you. By the way, your baby outgrowing the reflux is what we have all heard. They usually don’t outgrow it until they are at least 9 months old and a lot of babies later than that.

Okay the bright side of all this is your baby will be better if you fight. I’m not going to lie to you and say that your baby will sleep all night long, but things can be better. You just might be one of the lucky ones that your baby gets on meds. and they are happy and sleep well. There are many moms on here that can say that happened for them. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. THINGS WILL BE BETTER! Keep fighting.

Ditto to what Shelby said. Also, a lot of us got family drs to prescribe so if you have a good one that knows you well, perhaps you could have a talk to them? Goodluck.

Please don’t give up. Find a new doctor. We’ve exhausted almost every doc in our city, and just fired our ped GI as well b/c he won’t take us seriously b/c Hailey doesn’t have a tube. I’m still searching for a new doc after 20 months, so hang in there. I think that getting Dr. Phillips to speak to your doc is a fabulous idea… I think he gets his point across!

I like the idea of asking Dr. Phillips to talk to your pediatrician. A few moms here have done that with success.

Also, the family doctor idea is good too. Myles’ doctor is a family doctor. Quite a few moms here have said they had better luck with family doctors. Probably because they see adult patients will reflux all the time and they are more familiar with reflux meds. They also seem to be more senstive to how painful this condition is because their adult patients can tell them how much it hurts.

Don’t give up! Many of us have had to fight tooth and nail to get relief for our babies. You can do it!
