InactiveI don’t know if you’ve heard of it but manufacturers are pulling decongestants for infants off the shelves. It was on the news last night and my mother in law was at our house watching it with me. I tell her “what’s next?” and she goes “yeah, like giving her Prevacid for such a long period of time is not going to cause health issues when she’s older”. I was fuming inside (of course) but I said “we haven’t given it to her in months, we stopped”. DH came home and I told him so he started going off on me saying I shouldn’t have lied. I’ve had it up to here with their comments about the Prevacid. I said “maybe they’ll keep their mouths shut after I lie to them about it” I already know that waiting for support and understanding from them is like waiting for water in the middle of a desert. It’s not happening. She keeps “reminding” me how difficult it’ll be for us with two kids so close in age (when we have #2, Ariella will be 18 months). Instead of saying “it’ll all work out” she keeps telling me “I don’t know how you’ll do it”.

I feel like telling her “if you have nothing good to say, just keep your mouth zipped”. Sometimes I wish we didn’t have them so involved in our lives. Thanks for listening to me vent.October 12, 2007 at 12:53 pm #44152Anonymous
InactiveMy mil used to do the same thing. Sarah was 20 months when Hailey was born. It was hard, but I don’t think it’s ever easy, and now it’s great. If she makes those comments again, then maybe you can tell her that NOT giving her the prevacid will have worse long term consequences for her- like esophagitis.
HUGS.October 12, 2007 at 1:40 pm #44154Anonymous
InactiveI don’t think there is anything wrong with saying something to get her off your back. She doesn’t sound like the most supportive woman in the world! Don’t worry, It Will Work Out Fine!!! You have gone through and extremely tough infancy with Ariella, that with the next one, it can only get better. YOu are that much more aware of what to look for and how to help your new baby early on if necessary. Carter’s reflux was not nearly as difficult to treat as Dylan and Laura’s baby Ari, didn’t have reflux at all! You are going to do great, and anything that gives you less stress (like lying a bit) if it helps, then so be it.

InactiveMust be an In-Law thing! And I really feel for you, we are about to be staying with the IL’s as our house here sells and we find a new one, so things will be tough. My MIL is constantly making comments about how I raise my kids. Everything from “he can probably do without meds now” to “all babies spit up” to “organic isn’t necessary” ….seriously, you name it, I hear it. She’s gone as far as to say that there isn’t anything wrong with Landen at all but has only spent a few minutes at a time with him. She wasn’t around for the apnea monitor, seeing him turn blue….

. Sorry, I am rambling now. Your post just hit home with me! I agree with the others too that anything you need to say to get her off your back is fine. Also, you CAN do it with 2 kids. Believe me! It can be challenging at first, but it’s SO fun having them close together. They have a built-in playmate for life! All of the things you teach your first child to do seems to be taught to them by your 1st born! It’s so neat seeing them fill the role of big brother/big sister!! Kaden was just over 2 yrs of age when I had Landen so he was still a “baby” and very “needy” but I still wouldn’t have it any other way.

InactiveI don’t blame you at all. If she finds out later that Ariana is on meds you can just tell her that she needed to go back on. At some point you have to do something to get them to leave you alone!
You’ll do fine with two little ones so close in age. As Lori said, when they get older, you’ll probably love it.October 12, 2007 at 10:14 pm #44175hellbennt

InactiveI’m so sorry to hear you have such an unsupportive MIL who just doesn’t get it! Mine is the same way, so I can relate. Thankfully mine lives pretty far away so I only see my inlaws a few times a year – I know how awful that sounds.
Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do, even if that means not telling the truth. It can be so difficult going through the whole reflux thing and having an unsupportive and condescending MIL only makes it more difficult… I think I might lie as well! You will love having 2 little ones close in age – I do! Ben and Paige are nearly 21 months apart. For the first 6 months or so it was difficult, because the older one still needs so much from you and you are busy with a new baby, but you will get through that and then the fun begins. They grow so close so quickly and it is wonderful to see these 2 little people display such love towards each other. It’s incredible, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I wish you the best of luck!October 16, 2007 at 8:51 pm #44338Anonymous
