I would appreciate some help

I am hoping to find some help here. I have been on other fourms, but people are more interested in pointless chit-chat then help each other. I am hoping this one will be different. My son has not been diagnoised with Reflux, but his doctor has mentioned it as a possiblity. Here is what has been happening:

My son is 11 weeks old. I tried breast feeding, but gave up after 3 days because it hurt so bad. I had a few samples of Similac Advance from the hospital so I used them. When we went to the doctor he gave us Enfamil Premium Lipil to last until our WIC appointment. WIC put him on Enfamil Lipil. Everything was fine, except he was really gassy. I just thought this was normal, but then it got worse. He started crying all the time, having really bad gas, and was having hard bowel movements. I was told to switch him to Enfamil Gentlease, which did not help at all with the gas or excessive crying, but it did give him diarrhea. Next was Similac Isomil (a soy formula), this seemed to work for the 1st day, but after that it was more of the same. He was on Enfamil A.R. for a very short time, it seemed to help, but his doctor just wanted to switch him to Similac Alimentum right away. Which helped for a few days, but now he is crying a lot again, still has diarreha and a lot of gas, plus he seems to be spitting up more. Help!!! What should I do?

next step is to try nutrimigen or alimentum. I believe WIC should cover these, but you may need a letter from the doctor…

the gas is a sure sign of intolernace or even allergy to a protein- the two ‘major’ proteins are milk and soy. nutrimigen or alimentum have milk proteins but they are very very broken down. you need to give the switch to one of these formulas TWO WEEKS and after that, if there is still problems then it’s time to try neocate or elecare. but first things first…

if it’s ‘just’ lower GI distress then formula might be all you need
but if it’s pain from refluxing- either spitting up OR what is called silent reflux, where it comes up and then gets swallowed back down, then baby needs medicine to address the PAIN…

Sounds like he had constipation from the formula and now has diarrhea from another. Many babies have gas from formula, and formula can cause constipation. It was certainly a problem for my daughter. But formula should not cause diarrhea. If he has diarrhea, it may be an intolerance like Laura suggested. Is there any blood or mucous in his poop? How fast have you been doing the formula changes? Sometimes if switches are made too quickly, it’s hard to see results.

I was also thinking an intolerance possibly causing reflux issues. It sounds as though you’ve tried quite a few different formulas. Since he’s still having issues w/alimentum, you may want to look into elemental formulas(Elecare, Neocate, Nutramigen AA). Reflux may also be present like Laura mentioned & then meds would be needed as well!
