Ideas for breakfast (no milk/dairy)

[Anonymous]

Quick question, now that Ian’s one year (yippee!) and eating everything but milk/dairy-what are some good ideas for breakfast. He does not like to be fed (wants to do everything himself) and can’t hold a spoon himself yet so I’m dumbstruck for ideas. Cereal is a no go right now except for the finger food ones. Is it ok for him to have egg now?? Or is that risky with his intolerances. He seems to be able to eat everything else.

Any ideas are so appreciated! Oh, and any ideas how am I ever going to get him to use a spoon if he now won’t even let me spoon feed him. Such a little control freak now! But no complaints-he’s eating a ton by hand and I love every minute of it!

Tracy, glad to hear that Ian’s feeding himself well. What about pancakes and/or waffles for breakfast. You can make the pancakes yourself and add all kinds of things to them like fruit etc. Then for a spread/dip, you can use fruit puree, apple sauce, or jam. Homemade carrot muffins or blueberry were also big hits with Sarah. We also would do avocado or banana.

As for the spoon, I wouldn’t worry. It’s normal for them to be control freaks and to want to do it themselves, even if they can’t control it at all and just end up getting it everywhere BUT in their mouths. The more they practice, they somehow just figure it out with time.

Good to hear from you.

I think I remember my sister saying that egg yolks are ok after 1, and a lot of times, I just give Aidan fruit for breakfast. He loves blueberries and raspberries, I never let him eat them b/c I thought they were on the highly allerginic list, but one day I looked over and he was chowing down on his brothers (which were on a low table). I always use 2 spoons, one for me one for him, I put food one one give it to him, he “feeds himself” and he’ll sometimes play with the other one which lets me sneak some bites of food in!

Thanks guys! I can’t believe I didn’t think of pancakes!! I can probably just freeze them and take a couple out the day before right? Fruits always been good for us too. I’ve also stayed away from whole berries because I read something about seeds being a choking hazard but he used to eat them in puree form. However, how choking of a hazard can strawberry seeds be?? Any way to add a little fat in to he breakfast?

Also, if he won’t eat puree from me, should I just keep putting a jar out there and see if he’ll try while I keep offering the spoon. He just won’t even try right now. Curious! THANKS AGAIN!!

Hi Tracy,
Egg yolks are safe after 9 months, and egg whites are usually safe after 12 months. (all the alergines are in the white)

Also, I may be wrong, but I think most pancake batter recipes call for milk, but you could replace it with rice or soy milk. Adding the fruit is a good idea. Oatmeal or cream of wheat (if he eats wheat yet) might be something to try too.

You could also try a soy yogurt for something different.

If eggs are ok you can maybe make french toast. When I make french toast or pancakes I make tons of them and freeze them in idividual servings. That makes a quick breakfast the next morning. I never give them syrup though. I usually put a small amt of jam on their pancakes/waffles/french toast. They love it and it’s healthier than syrup.

How about toast with almond butter and jam? (Good source of fat and very yummy).

Maybe whole grain muffins. Hard to find here but I bet you can find them where you live.

Berries are so healthy and they really are an acquired taste, so I gave them to my kids very young. I never heard about the choking on seeds thing. Melons are also an acquired taste. If they don’t eat them early on they probably won’t like them, so maybe try some cantaloupe or honeydew.

As for the spoon, Liza and Ellie both went throug that too, where they wouldn’t let me feed them by spoon anymore. I used to put some purees or yogurt or whatever into a small bowl and give them a spoon of their own, and like Jill said, I’d have a spoon, too. I’d sneak some bites in as they was trying her own spoon or eating finger foods. Eventually they learned to self-feed and also gave up the power struggle with the spoon so I could feed them easily and they could also feed themselves.

That’s great that he’s eating so well.

At that age, Seth loved mini muffins. You can buy several mixes that are dairy free and bake with either rice or soy milk. We liked the blueberry and cinnamon ones. I would make a batch and freeze them.

We’d also do a lot of different dry cereals.

You can get dairy free pancake mixes at the health food stores. As for the strawberry seeds, I didn’t even know that strawberries have seeds!!! LOL! But best to be careful. Sarah likes Cherry jam- no seeds.

Cherry jam….YUMMY. I’ll have to look for that.

I used to make a very thick oatmeal gruel so jonah could eat it with his hands…I tried looking for an an oatmeal bar type recipe but gave up- I’m not that motivated– so anyway, I’d add the pureed fruit to the oatmeal and played around w/ amounts of other things in it to make it very thick…I used to put yogurt in it, too, so maybe soy yogurt?

as for the spoon, I did what jill did

ps: here’s bubba bread: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2792&a mp;KW=bubba

We used to do the double spoon thing with Kaelyn as well. She was a control freak about her spoon, but as long as she had one we could often sneak a few bites in. I still add blackstrap molasses to her pancake and muffin mixes to sneak in some calcium and iron. We also add it to her oatmeal. I just add a little bit so it doesn’t really make much difference in the taste. Around that age she loved scrambled eggs. Even with all of her other allergy issues, the eggs were fine.

Marisa is a big fan of toasted and buttered English muffins (I buy the whole

grain ones) – other people I know use soy butter or apple butter instead!knb182006-10-3 12:42:37

you can make pancakes out of muffin mix that does not have milk in them. just add an egg along with water or soymilk. what about apple sause with the mixed fruit in it? in most stores you can get it with out extra sugar.

We started with scrambled eggs a couple weeks ago and she has not had a problem. She actually feels included now and can eat what her sisters are eating. We were getting bored with cereals too so I am glad you posted. She also likes grits, oatmeal, soy yogurt, and cantelope for breakfast. I found soy margerine at the health food store that is great for baking. Good luck!
