InactiveHello ladies. It’s been a while since I’ve been here. Just coming back and having to maybe deal with the whole reflux issue makes my stomach go in knots. Here’s my story:
DD#1 screamed from the night of her birth until 3 1/2 mnths of age(when she was placed on zegerid. Thank God for Marci-kids. Anyhow, she had silent reflux and gained weight. I think that is why we had such a hard time diagnosing. Docs think baby is gaining weight and not spitting up so everything must be fine…..and it wasn’t. She would cry for five hours straight. I could smell and “acidy” smell on her breathe. It was just HORRIBLE until the zegerid came into play. She’s now medicine free and a happy and healthy toddler.Fast forward to now:Two weeks ago, I had dd#2. She has been so calm and relaxed. However I asked my pedi about reflux showing up. He said it was uncommon to show up at birth like DD#1 and siblings have a greater chance of having it. For the past few days, Sydney (the new baby) has had some fussy spells that remind me of a refluxer. She cried last night for three hours straight. She kept balling up and rooting around viciously…even after eating. I don’t smell the acidy smell on her breathe nor do I hear a gurgling in her throat like with my other daughter. She does have an occasional cough (not a lot though). If reflux often shows up later, I’m afraid of taking her in “too early” and getting her tested for reflux. I am ebf’ing and supplementing with formula to get my supply build up. She gets about half and half. First she was on Similac Advance and now the pedi put her on Similac Isomil Soy. I thought I’d try and wait things out the next week unless things get worse. Is it common for siblings to both have reflux? Or am I just being overly paranoid due to DD#1 difficult start? Thanks for any responses. This was just so hard to think about going through all this again.Melissamom to Gracie 3-2-06 and Sydney 12-19-07January 4, 2008 at 11:02 am #46931Anonymous
InactiveFrom what I understand, reflux tends to run in families. Both of mine had/have it, and I know several moms on this board have more than one kid with it. HOWEVER, there are also the lucky ones who have kids without it.
Probably what I would do, would be to just watch her very closely. Maybe try some Mylanta Cherry Supreme if she has another crying spell and see if it helps. If so, chances are, it’s a reflux thing. Even though my daughter had it, it took us a full month to figure it out with my son even though he probably had it from birth. His just didn’t present the same way my daughter’s reflux did.Hopefully, Sydney is just a little gassy and you all won’t have to go through it again!January 4, 2008 at 11:42 am #46936hellbennt
Keymasterwith my second, I went ‘Mylanta Happy’ :
I truly felt that he had maybe MILD mild mild reflux (?) but, I also don’t know what a ‘normal’ baby is like, unfortunately!…He wound up getting mylanta maybe once a day, if that. I truly don’t think a ml here and there (no more than 2, total in a day) is going to harm him…It’s just that I heard him glerping (internal wet hiccup sound) and gasping and doing all the silent reflux stuff that Jonah did. However, when Jonah would exhibit any one of the symptoms I see Ari have, it would have set Jonah off howling /shrieking inconsolably for hours. With Ari, he let out a yelp and cried for just a minute…BIG difference! -
