InactiveHI! Im new but not to reflux, My first DD has simply GER and was helped by Prevacid Granules. She outgrew her refulx around 9 months or so and is now 23 months old.
DS however is another story, hes 8 weeks, and it doesnt seem like the prevacid worked for him, nor does it seem like the Zantac liquid does, he is also on Levacin for gas, as well as lactose free formula.
Hes SO uncomfortable and fussy most of the time, unless eating or sleeping on his wedge or propped up on his tummy on pillows…
I just dont know where to go from here, his pedi doesnt seem to think he needs to be seen by a PEdi gastro doc, but he did say that he has a short frenulum that needs to be clipped and that could be whats causing him to take in more air, therefore being uncomfy due to gas… Is this possibly true?
It seems like it takes him FOREVER to get comfy to go back to sleep at night, and his spit up while only a teaspoon or so at a time, is SOOOO STINKY like DD, very acidy smelling..
Any suggestion would help!

InactiveHello,
It sounds like he might need his Prevacid dose increased if he’s still in pain and if you’re smelling stomach acid. Maybe you could ask your doc to try increasing his Prevacid. How much is he taking? (if you don’t mind me asking)October 6, 2006 at 12:53 pm #15069Anonymous
Inactiveyeah since you smell acid and he is not comfortable sounds like the dose is too low. have you seen marci-kids.com and read through medications?
also, many babies with reflux have mspi. regular milk and soy formulas can aggrivate reflux even with a high dose.
my son needed neocate to solve his reflux issues along with a high dose of zegerid.
does your son have a confirmed lactose intolerance?

InactiveA confirmed lactose in tolerence isn’t usually why dr’s put babies on the lacto free formula, usually it’s just lactose sensativity, as in, the lactose gives them gas or diarreah, and soy isn’t an option. The lactose free formula is easier to digest than the soy is, that’s why I went with it.

(if you don’t mind me asking)Hi, we actually dont do the prevacid anymore, it was hard for me to get it to him since you cant mix it with food, just water. But when he was taking it, it was only 1/2 a packet in the morning. But now hes on Zantac, taking 0.6 ML twice a day( but sometimes I give him a dose at Lunch if he seems especially uncomfortable).

He isnt lactose intolerant, and the soy helped, just constipated him REALLY bad therefore causing more discomfort and gas. SO thats why we put him on the milk based lactose free milk. I do have some Nutramigen milk for him, but havent tried it, and he’s just started the Lactose free yesterday, so we’re still doing 1/2 and 1/2 of his soy and the new milk to make the switch easier, So I will give it a few days once we get solely on the lactose free and see if I see a difference before trying another route with the milk again… But it does seem to me that his Zantac needs adjusting.
I feel frustrated with his doctor, from what Ive read and watched via videos on the net, It seems he needs s thourough exam to really find what the root of his problem is, so far we’ve done everything over the phone(suggestions w/ the milk, calling the Rx’s in, etc) and while I appreciate it b/c it can get costly w/ co-pays and swapping milks, I just feel that its time to try another route/doctor or specialist. But I dont know where to go or how to go about it.

InactiveIt’s too bad he had a hard time taking the prevacid, because I think (from what I’ve heard) that is what would really help him. Prevacid works differently than Zantac – it would reduce the acid in his stomach so that if he does spit up, it doesn’t burn his esophogus & make him uncomfortable.
There are some other options though that you CAN give with food. One is Prevacid in a compounded suspension form (this is what we’re using right now). Most people don’t like it as well, but it’s been fine for us.
Another one you might try is Zegerid. It’s a PPI medicine like Prevacid, but you can give it anytime & don’t have to give it on an empty stomach.
Just some ideas… I hope you can find something that works!

InactiveThis is where Im confused with the prevacid. With DD her pedi said to give it WITH a little cereal and it worked GREAT for her. I would prefer to give him the prevacid b/c of cost IF thats gonna work for him too, BUT it was so hard to give it to him that he probably didnt get the full dose he was suppost to so thats probably why it didnt work….
HE HATES to take the zantac, I dont know if its b/c of the strong smell, or if its hurting his throat or something, but he SCREAMS and thrashes his head side to side…
SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH I feel for you mama’s!

zantac tastes awful.plus is has alcohol and maybe its burning his throat.
i would def try for a PPI because zantac doesnt do much for most babies.
try to get prevacid compounded that way you dont have to time with meals.
or ask for zegerid, thats what my son is on and i can give whenever and with formula.here is a good link:

InactiveHello and welcome.
I agree….a good PPI dose will likely help him. My son was a new baby once he was on the appropriate dose of Prevacid. He was on the Prevacid solutabs which are very easy to give and taste good, but do have to be timed around meals.
Like Natalia mentioned there’s another option which works very well for many babies. Zegerid. It does not have to be timed around meals.
I would recommend looking at the information at http://www.marci-kids.com and trying to get your son on a PPI medication like Prevacid or Zegerid. Most of us have found Zantac to not be very helpful.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

Hi all, I first want to THANK YOU all so much for the support! WOW! Last night I started to put him a little rice cereal in his bottle, and it seems to help him sleep better, and he’s not as fussy( now just not wanting to go back to bed is a different problem! LOL!
) and seems more content instead of uncomfortable after finishing a bottle, PLUS he only wants about 3-4 ozs instead of the usualy 6 or 8 oz at a feeding( I suspect the reason such a young baby wanted so much to eat was to soothe his throat, makes me sad…) which in turn helps him not to reflux also..plus he slept SO much more soundly than normal, 2 hrs! at a time instead of the usual 20-30 mintues!!!!!
If this doesnt help him enough, Im gonna ask about the zegrid(sp?) and if my insurance doesnt cover it, depending on the cost just paying for it out of pocket, we’ll ask about prevacid compounded, and make sure to just get 2 weeks at a time from what Ive read

thanks so much ladies!!

Inactivewell, I feel we had a set back kinda day today…he was miserable 90% of the day…I just dont know how to comfort him when he;s like that.. he draws his legs up and cringes and whines and burps little burps…
I dont think that the cereal is goona be enough, but we have a 2 month checkup on monday, so anything you can suggest other than swapping meds( Im definately gonna do that!) please let me know!!
Do you guys think I should try to put him back on the prevacid granules I still have for tommorrow, or does it take more than one day to work anyways??
