Improvement never lasts

My 3 month old daughter has been diagnosed with reflux and MSPI/milk protein allergy. We’ve seen a pedi gi who switched her from prevacid solutab to liquid prevacid (2.5ml in am and pm). It seems like she was fine on the liquid for the first few days but now is screaming in pain at night.

Can you share your experiences with these meds with me? Is the solutab typically better? The doctor switched FROM the solutab b/c she said that there is a little bit of lactose in it that may be irritating our daughter due to her mspi.

My son also had mspi and I cut all traces of dairy and soy from my diet. It worked well. I have done the same for my daughter in order to continue nursing her and in hopes of avoiding prescription formula.

I’ve read that breastmilk’s form of sugar is lactose regardless of what you eat. So I dont think the fasttabs should have been bothering her for that reason. But they also have aspertame so maybe that was it.

How long has she been on a PPI for? Maybe it’s just not been long enough. Or if it’s been awhile, maybe it’s time for a higher dose?

Yes, breastmilk has lactose but it’s not cow’s milk derived. Lactose in the solutab would be.

She was on the solutab from 4wks old to about 12wks old. Our pedi increased her dose to 7.5mg in am and 15mg in pm. Pedi GI felt that was too much so she gave us the liquid prevacid at an equivalent to 7.5mg in am and pm. We’ve been using the liquid for a week.

maybe she needs the higher dose. also pharmacy compounding of the prevacid is often done wrong and the med becomes ineffective fast this way. maybe try uping the dose and using bufferbabies?

No one knows why some babies react adversely to solutabs, it could be the aspertame, the inactive ingredients or maybe it is the milk sugar. Anyway, yes there are babies who don’t tolerate solutabs, whatever the reason may be…in addition, compounding done by the pharmacy are NOTORIOUS for not being made correctly & for not being effective. I’m posting from my phone, so I can’t provide the link, but there’s a great informational thread called Prevacid 101. Go to the Introduce Yourself Forum & read Groupie Intro. From there, you’ll find the link to Prevacid 101. hellbennt2011-03-21 18:13:49

My son has MSPI and is on Neocate but the Solutab actually has worked better for him than the liquid suspension of Prevacid. If your child was better on Solutabs, I’d go back to that or try bufferbabies. good luck!

Seriously??! I wonder if that’s my son’s problem. He was put on compounded (mixed with water, right?) priolosec after our insurance wouldn’t approve the prevacid solutabs. He was put on 2.5ml when he was three months old, up to twice a day, and that was 3 months ago. He’s spitting up constantly as of late and is very fussy. Could it be the dosage or the compounding of the meds?

I think it could be either. Compounding consists of adding preservatives and such, that can affect the medication itself. Plus if he’s been on that same dose for 3 months, I’m sure he’s gained weight and needs a different dosage.

I would highy suggest buffer babies if you can!
