Infant Screaming in pain

My 7 week old daughter is crying all the time. She screams and screams and either toots or poops. It is dark green and watery with a bit of seeds. Any thoughts on whether it could be from the new formula or the meds? She is on Prevacid solutabs and has been for a week. She is being fed Goodstart formula and some of my pumped breast milk…this for 2 weeks. It has been so hard watching her in such pain and not being able to calm her down.

Please understand that I am not sure this will make a difference but we had to put Colt on Goodstart without dha/ara. Regular goodstart would give him a terrible stomach ache. Just a thought.

Unfortunately it’s probably going to be trial and error in finding out what’s bothering her. It could be the dha/ara, but it could also simply be the milk proteins in the Good Start formula. Maybe she needs a hypo formula like Alimentum.

Also, if it is milk proteins that’s bothering her you may have to eliminate milk from your diet.

Are there times of the day when she’s worse? How many doses of Prevacid is she getting? If she’s worse after her meds it could be the lactose and or aspartame in the solutabs. Some babies get tummy cramps from the solutabs. For my son I noticed it after each dose. It lasted about an hour each time and then once his body adjusted to the medication the cramping stopped and he was fine.

I wish I could be more helpful, but it really is detective work trying to figure out what’s making our babies so miserable. I hope you get it worked out soon.

It’s definitely trial and error like Christine said. Although watery dark green poop does sound kind of suspicious. Is she constipated, or is it diarrhea?

Oh I am so sorry you’re going through this. My dd also went through that and it’s the most heartwrenching thing to witness b/c you have no idea what’s wrong and feel totally helpless. Reflux is unfortunately such a guessing game. Not the fun kind.. The good thing is that there’s hope it will get better. My dd screamed ALL the time when she ate(bf)and it’s hard not to feel like it’s you sometimes. She is so much better now that she’s on the right meds and the right dose though,thank goodness.

My thoughts are just possible milk protein allergy(where if you’re bf like Christine said you would have to eliminate dairy and possibly soy including hidden)or maybe she needs a higher dose of the prevacid. Also, are you giving the solutabs on an empty stomach and following up with a meal 30-60min later? It’s tricky,especially with bf babes, but in order for the med to work,you gotta do it

Anyway, I’ll be thinking of you guys today and hoping you get to the bottom of her pain. My prayers are with you! Know you are doing the very best you can for your sweet baby,you’re an awesome mommy!

My milk officially stopped coming in yesterday (sigh) so today I had to give her just Goodstart. At first she was doing well. But then it all started again. Except this time she hasn’t pooped at all since 2am. Which is a complete change. She usually has some poop in almost every diaper. She is getting 7.5 mg of Prevacid just once a day. And from what I read that is a low dose. But she is a preemie and only 7 pounds so the dr I’m sure has his reasons for the dose. Just have a feeling it is the formula.

I would encourage you to check out http://www.marci-kids.com just b/c(I don’t know your situation exactly and I am NOT a doc,just my two cents and mommy opinion)when I first discovered my baby had reflux she was on a pretty ridiculous dose and I too thought, ” oh,my ped has a good reason”. Yeah, his reason was he didn’t know enough about reflux to prescribe a dose that would make a difference. Have since gone through one more ped and finally when Kate was two months found one that would listen to me and treat her reflux aggressivly enough to not prolong her pain. (breath) That being said, you have to listen to your mommy instinct which is more reliable than anything or anyone around here in my opinion. Like I said, this is just my two cents so feel free to take it or leave, leave. leave, it

I wouldn’t worry too much about the poop change, as long as she’s still passing soft stools and she’s not consitpated. I’m pretty sure breast milk produces more frequent stools than formula, so that could be the reason for the change.

I agree with Claire….it’s very possible that 7.5 mgs just isn’t going to be enough. I’d give it another week and if she’s not much better I’d print and fax the info from http://www.marci-kids.com to her doc and ask him to let her try a higher dose. Most babies really need at least two doses a day because they metabolize these meds so much faster than adults.

It could very well be a combination of not enough meds and the formula. This proves to be the case for many reflux babies.

I hope you get it all sorted out soon. I remember how hard it was trying to figure out what was wrong with my reflux babies.
