InactiveI have three boys, ages 5, 3 and almost 2. My oldest had reflux that was bad but not compared to some that I had read on the website. It was controllable with meds and life got better quickly. My youngest two had MSPI, with the baby being VERY sensitive. With the youngest I could not even use Alimentum or Nutramigen due to the heightened sensitivity. Breastfeeding was it! It almost seems like the more kids I have, the worse it gets. While we finally found a dr who would validate my issues (pediatrician said no such thing as sensitivity – either allergic or not, which is NOT what our experience was), I have not been able to figure out if this is going to be an issue if we have any more children.
As I am sure many of you know, the diet is often hard to follow when you are trying to ensure as a breastfeeding mother that you don’t ingest ANYTHING that will cause the pain. It got easier with the more info I gathered (and this website and others were SO helpful) but still I dread that part. However, kids are just gifts and lucky for us the problems subsided by around 9 months so I know I can do it.
Does anyone know if this is to be expected with my next child, should we decide to try again and if it will be even worse? Are there any guidelines on when you should stop drinking milk, etc? Anything that can be done prior to giving birth that might make a difference?
Thanks for any advice. I really feel for you ladies dealing with this right now because I remember it being so hard and feeling like I was at the end of my rope. I do think this website and the things I learned from it gave me the ability to help others. There were other people around me whose babies had this but no one had any clue until they started eliminating. Hang in there!

InactiveI know I have read somewhere that if you have one MSPI baby, you have a higher likelyhood of having another. But that still doesn’t mean that you most definitely will.

InactiveIt seems that a lot of moms on this board have more than one refluxer and/or more than one baby with MSPI. And I did read somewhere a few months ago that there is a genetic link for reflux.

Keymasterwaving hello here! baby #2 THANK GOD IS REFLUX FREE!!!
however, baby #1 did not have mspi…he did have SEVERE gerd, though…
people sometimes try to eliminate offending proteins (milk & soy & who knows, maube more like wheat) during the last trimester of pregnancy so that when their milk comes in it’s free of potentially offending proteins and then at birth that’s one less thing to rule out…

InactiveMy first didn’t have it but my second has a wicked case. I’ve heard that it’s certainly familial, and moreso when you’re dealing with allergies and intolerances. Someone once posted about a genetic link for severe GERD, autosomal dominant, I thought, but I couldn’t find the link, so I don’t know if I’m remembering correctly.

InactiveAnd there would be no problem nutritionally for a pregnant mom to start eliminating milk/soy during the last trimester?
I find it interesting that several kids outgrew problems at 9 months. I wonder if there is some intestinal immaturity that has to be overcome before the sensitivity subsides. Mine take milk fine now but boy was it an issue until that 9 month mark.
Thanks for your input. I think I know what I need to do if we do have another child. I just am so scared of the beginning because it was so hard and has just gotten harder with each baby. I know I can live through it but it’s not a very warm, fuzzy new baby time at our house!

Thanks! Katherine

InactiveI think that those who outgrew it at 9 months more likely had reflux due to an immature LES than due to allergies/intolerances. Those tend to hang around longer.

KeymasterI think that if you’re taking a calcium supplement & prenatals it’s ok (of course the supplement would have to be free of milk/soy as well as the prenatals…) there’s a yahoobreastfeedingreflux board & they’re very knowledgable about this sort of thing there
– link can be found from groupie intro (and I think from mspi page) -
