InactiveThis is probably a dumb question, but since this is my first experience with AR, I don’t know the answer. When a baby is on meds, doesn’t appear to be in any pain, and is generally happy, how often should they be spitting up? What is “normal”, or is in a “normal” range? We average about 12-14 spitups a day, at least half of which are soaking (meaning the burp cloth, sheet, or towel can’t be used again without being washed). None of them are projectile, so neither my doctor or pharmacist seem concerned, and my email to Marci-Kids of three days ago still hasn’t been delivered because of a server issue on their part. This board seems to be pretty quiet most of the time, but I’m hoping a few AR veterans will be able to chime in. I’m wondering if I need to try a new medication or up the dosage of the one DD is on, but if this many spitups is normal, I guess I just have to learn to cope? Could someone help me?

InactiveThe medicine won’t stop the spit up.. nothing but age/time will. As long as your baby is happy and appears to be pain free then you are fine. I have a “happy spitter” with my 2nd child and she soaks burp cloths often during the day but smiles while she is doing it.. HTH.

Keymasteryes, what Beth says! if baby isn’t in pain and is gaining weight, then it’s fine to spit up and you have a ‘happy spitter’ and a ‘laundry problem’ on your hands…

InactiveShe technically isn’t a happy spitter, since she’s on Prevacid. My oldest was a happy spitter and never needed meds, but the frequency and amount with her was much smaller than her younger sister. It seems that when we have a fresh preparation of meds from the pharmacist (her Prevacid is a compound of lansoprazole and sodium bicarb that must be kept refrigerated) her spitting decreases by about 75%. But once the meds are around 7-10 days old, it seems like it gets worse again. She isn’t arching or screaming like she was before the Prevacid so I’m guessing she’s not in pain. I just didn’t know how much spitting there should be on average with meds and if what was going on with us was too much or about right. Thanks to both of you for responding.

Keymasterok well the compound most likely isn’t being made correctly but, since you say it’s working, you may be one of the lucky ones whose compound is

to read more- here’s prevacid 101, last post on the page
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1as far as the spitting goes, again, if there’s no pain then it ‘should’ be ok (and as long as she isn’t spitting so much that she isn’t gaining weight)

InactiveYou can actually have a happy spitter if they are on the right dose of meds. My ds became a happy spitter after he was on the right dose of prevacid and the right formula. He actually spit up more when the pain was controlled b/c it didn’t hurt anymore so he just would let it out… I agree with Laura that the compound probably isn’t made right.. also i think that compounds are only good for 14 days anyway so if they are giving you a 39 day supply that could be part of the problem as well. Good Luck.
