I’m going insane with a crying/screaming baby. We started prevacid last monday – 1/2 solutab once a day but i’ve been giving it to her twice a day – there has been some improvement in mood – instead of crying all waking hours, she cries 90% of waking hours. Right now she’s taking gentlese formula so i tried her on some soy – big mistake – she vomited it all up – all 3 bottles (and not spit up – she lost all of it!!) So i think i’m going to try some nutramagin today – i don’t know what else it could be? she has no other signs of intolerance (rash, red ring, etc).

Any ideas?

Just a thought……when my son started Prevacid at 8 wks old it gave him terrible stomach cramps for the first 10-14 days. After that, he was fine and improved steadily.

Neither of my sons could tolerate the solutabs. They contain lactose and aspertime. I was not comfortable with these ingredients. Many babies have done fine on them, however, both of my children were crying screaming monsters on the solutabs.

I would try another form of Prevacid…..

We tried both gentlease and soy, both were not tolerated well. We switched to Alimentum and noticed a difference in a day. My Best Friend had a baby three months ago and he has done nothing but scream for three months, they tried Zantac, it did nothing. She was breast feeding and thought that was the best thing for him. Not willing to try a dairy free diet, she tried Alimentum last Saturday and today, Friday he is a different baby. I would try switching the formula, she may have MSPI.

My son also had tummy cramps initially when he started Prevacid. For him the cramps passed after about two weeks and he did very well from then on.

Sounds like MSPI is a possibilty for your little one, so trying the Alimentum is probably a good idea. It usually takes two weeks to see improvement so try to stick with it unless things get worse.

Also, it’s possible that even 15mg is not enough. You can read about PPI dosing for infants at http://www.marci-kids.com and maybe consider asking for a higher dose.

We’ve done two bottles of nutramagin so far. If Erin has reflux, it’s silent reflux. My pedi put her on prevacid b/c she was crying all waking hours and my ds had reflux. The prevacid seemed to help a little bit but she still cries 90% of waking hours if not eating. We started her on nestle good start when we got home from the hospital and then my MD switched us to the gentlese and now i’ve switched to the nutramagin (after trying the 3 soy bottles that she vomited entirely up).

So she’s had two bottles of nutramagin and is now ‘spitting.’ She’s not vomiting, but she hasn’t been a spitter until these bottles – it’s a mouthful at a time but once with the first bottle and once with this second bottle I saw the purple prevacid stuff come up and she got her prevacid this morning before 8. Is this nomal. I’ve also noticed a slight rash on her chest and belly – not her face – little red pinpricks – what is the rash like with MSPI?

I posted about Erin last week and used to post about my son Andrew when he had reflux – but yesterday and the day before I coudn’t access this site and now it seems like a ton of posts are gone. So i’m familiar with marci-kids.com and all of that.

I’m not sure, but the pin prick marks sound like what my son has and my ped calls it exzema (sp?). As far as spitting up the purple prevacid stuff. I think it is normal. I think as long as it has been 15 to 30 min. after they have taken it it means it is in their system. I could be wrong about the times. You might want to ask you ped or pharmacy, but my older son also spit up the purple prevacid stuff.

also- how long are you giving each formula switch? from all i’ve learned here (3 yrs worth,lol!) it’s important to give each change 2wks…

also, it’s important to switch the formula gradually & not ‘cold turky’

i’m kind of wondering if you aren’t changing too many things at once. the prevacid can take 2-3 weeks before any improvement is seen, and like laura said—-formula changes can take a little time to show improvement also. i’m also wondering what you will do when the prevacid runs out since you are using double the amount—–will your doc prescribe more for you?

My pedi gave me 9 solutab samples and then a form to get 10 free solutabs from the pharmacy – plus we go for her two week checkup in two weeks – I won’t run out of the prevacid before then and I’ll ask to up her dose – it shouldn’t be a problem.

She’s doing much better with eating the nutramagin. I would not give her soy for two weeks after the reaction she had. I know that the prevacid can take some time to take effect – today is day 12. We saw immediate improvement two days after starting it (some content awake time) and none since.

It’s so odd how your own two kids can exhibit such different etiologies.

If your DD is allergic to milk and soy or has an intolerance to them, I would be cautious about the solutabs. I was told, that the coating contains milk ingredients. You can contact the Prevacid people, and ask exactly what is in them, and ask if this could affect a child with this condition. We stayed clear of Solutabs bc of that reason since my DD is MSPI. Just a thought…maybe ask your ped or gi.

I hope things get better for her soon! Glad the Nutramigen seems to be helping with the vomiting!

solutabs have lactose, which is entirely different than milk protein…. many MSPI babies do great on the solutabs….
