just prescribed prevacid. need HELP!!!

Hey there. My son has severe reflux. He is 6 months old, 3 adjusted. Only on formula no solids yet. He spits up at least 1/4 of his bottle each feeding. He just got switched to Prevacid from Zantac. He is also on Reglan. I was told to open the capsules and put it in his milk and then feed him the milk. I can’t figure out how I am going to do this. I will call the doctor tomorrow but I am so stressed i can’t sleep. If I put it in his milk and then he spits up, what is to prevent him from spitting the med up? Does it work immediately or does it take time to work. Also, he takes it 3 times a day and eats 4 times a day so most of his doses are between feedings. I can’t exactly give him a few sips of milk between feedings just to give him meds. He’ll freak out. Please give me your thoughts and also let me know if your child took this med, how you did it.

The prevailing wisdom on this board is that you should NOT put the prevacid beads in the milk. They need to be given at least 30 minutes prior to the feed. The prevacid capsules are a delayed release PPI and so they need time to work their way through the system before they are activated by the next meal.

To administer them you could try putting them in a little water and syringing them in, or a little apple juice (there might be less of a chance to spit up if you are only giving 30 mls versus a whole feed). If he does spit up straight away though you are likely to see the beads and I would redose personally).

Have you been to marci-kids.com? They have lots of information about PPI’s. It also might give you some idea about the other forms of PPI’s.

Sorry to hear your little one is spitting up so much. My son has also always spit up a lot so I know how frustrating it can be. I agree with everything Therese said. It’s best to give that kind of Prevacid on an empty stomach followed up with a meal 30 min. later. That should also reduce the chance of him spitting it up. I was also going to mention that the Prevacid won’t help much with the actual spitting up, but it will help with the acid and the pain resulting from it. The Reglan however might help with the spitting up. My son is on a different motility med called erythromycin and it helped his vomiting immensely. Good luck with everything! Hi there. Sorry that you’re having a hard time. You can not put the capsules in the milk- one reason being what Therese said. The other being that the basic pH of the milk will deactivate the med. You can mix it into a bit of applesauce, and then give it that way- on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30 minutes later. But, what I would do would be to ask the doc to change the script to the solutabs. Then you just dissolve the tablet in a bit of water, suck it up with a medicine dropper, and give it that way. And it tastes yummy like strawberry, so most babies like it. Good luck.
