Inactive(I’m brand-new here, having found y’all from Laura at another website!)
We just finished four days at a German pediatric clinic, where they have prescribed their version of Priosec (omeprazole). We were given a few pills to get us through until we get some at the Apotheke, but grinding them, mixing them with water, and getting them down Emily with a syringe isn’t working so well. She vomited the two attempts I’ve made.
She’s not really eating much solid food (and most of it ends up on her instead of IN her), and she doesn’t accept a bottle except under major duress. I was going to ask our military physician about having the medication made into a liquid suspension and hope to heaven that the mail-order pharmacy can do that for us. (The base pharmacy here in Germany doesn’t carry Prilosec.)
Now that I’ve come here, though, I’m reading about Zegerid and the problems/concerns with compounding omeprazole. I don’t know what to do!! I’m seriously doubting that they’ll be willing to prescribe Zegerid, particularly considering that they don’t even work with anything other than Zantac and Reglan.
What should I know before we check with the NP tomorrow??

InactiveSince you’re in Germany, you can get CaraCream, and then I believe you can add the omeprazole to the CaraCream and give it like that. CaraCream turns PPI drugs into a stable suspension so you don’t have to worry about compounding. It basically becomes like Zegerid. I would email or call Joel Andrews from reflux solutions to find out about it. You can probably get his address from the website http://www.marci-kids.com . Otherwise I’ll try to look it up for you. Good luck.

Inactivefound it…. it’s andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu . One problem we’ve found is that our insurance won’t cover the CaraCream so we have to pay for it out of pocket and it’s a bit expensive for us with the exchange rates. Maybe someone else has a solution to this. Hope that Joel (or someone else) can help you out.

InactiveI just wanted to add (and sorry if this comes across making me sound ignorant), but there is another mum who posts on this site. She posts under “Johnny’s mom” and she is also on a military base in Germany. Maybe she is near you! I don’t know how many bases there are in Germany (this is where I hope that I don’t sound like an idiot). Just thought I’d share. I often wish that we had someone close by who was also going through this. Anyhow, good luck to you and your little one.

InactiveAmy,
It sounds like CaraCream would be a good fit for you. Email me with all of your information: andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu. You would mix the omeprazole with the CaraCream and it would make it both stable and easier to administer. Let me know if you have any questions.
