My son Noah was born February 27, 2013. He was weighed a week ago and weighed 8lb 11oz. He was given a script or zantac a week ago and has been ineffective. He was just prescribed 7.5 ml of Prevacid solubles once a day over the phone. I am so concerned that this dose is not enough. Should I call the doctor and demand a higher dose? I want to get this under control as quickly as possible but am afraid my dr will not want to up the dose since we haven’t even been on it long.
Thanks so much for any advice or information.

What you could do is give the Prevacid 7.5 mg during day and Zantac at night. You can give Mylanta Cherry Supreme for break through pain. At that weight my son was allowed 2.5 ml 4x a day but I would check with doctor. Do not stop the Zantac until you know the Prevacid is working. If after the two weeks you do not see a change then call your doctor and DEMAND a higher dose, preferably 7.5 twice a day! Good luck and message me if you need anything. I have been in your exact situation, it is so tough!
April 10, 2013 at 9:04 am #71991AnonymousInactiveThanks for posting! I would like your opinion. Noah has been on the prevacid for 4 days. His dr did up his dose per my request. He is on pevacid soluables 7.5 twice a day. We are no longer noticing the reflux symptoms but he won’t sleep long at all, which he wasn’t doing with the reflux symptoms either but this is different. It is more like insomnia. And he also seems to have gas pains bad. Because this is such a roller coaster, I start to question if he had reflux to start out with?? But the symptoms he had from reflux, arching back, crying out in pain, tight cough, congestion, etc seem to be gone. Could the prevacid work that quickly? I can’t help but feel like I should take him off the meds. This is so hard! I feel like a crazy person most of the time these days. Thanks for any advice.
April 10, 2013 at 3:32 pm #72005hellbenntKeymasterI just posted in your other post- my guess is the solutabs!
Get capsules. You have to give on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later, just like the solutabsAND you have to give w/ a 1/2 teaspoon of apple sauceApril 10, 2013 at 6:36 pm #72010AnonymousInactiveTo me it definitely sounds like reflux. That is the exact same thing my son did! I took him off the Prevacid because of the insomnia. He had trouble sleeping with the the reflux but on Prevacid it was horrible. I switched him to Prilosec and tummy care max and it was a lifesaver. Unfortunately the company went out of business so you can no longer purchase the tummy care. There are posts on here about how to make it yourself. I would try to do make it. I had the Prilosec
Compounded from a pharmacy and it was so disgusting my son threw it up every time, so it was pointless. The homemade mixture on this website is made with mylanta cherry supreme which my son loves, you just have to be careful of the bowel movements. Good luck, let me know if I can help!

April 10, 2013 at 10:13 pm #72013AnonymousInactiveHow old was your son when you gave the “homemade” version? Did you consult his doctor and did he tell you to switch to Prilosec? Thanks! He has only slept three hours today!
April 10, 2013 at 10:36 pm #72014AnonymousInactiveAlso how long did you have him on prevacid before you decided to take him off?
April 11, 2013 at 7:36 am #72018AnonymousInactiveOkay let’s see…. He was born in August and probably put on Prevacid in November. I switched to the Prilosec via the doctor in December
(The end of December) after and endoscopy showed nothing but acid reflux. Then he was throwing that yo because it was disgusting and he was worse then ever because he wasnt getting any of the medicine,
and that was when I switched to tummy care max. I officially started on Janurary 7 ( I remember the exact day because immediately there was a vast improvement) when switching from one ppi to another there is no wait period like there is when first started. I never was on the homemade mixture (but was very willing to use it…. It is basically the same thing as the company made stuff.) I did a ton of research and reading on the tummy care max and the homemade mixture and made the decision (without my doctor who claimed he had never heard of it… But if I listened to my doctor my son would still be in agony!) I read all of the ingredients and there was nothing that could hurt him and it was the best decision I could of made because he is a differen child and now has the ability to just be a baby without all of the pain he was experiencing!! If you want I could send you a batch of the tummy care and you could try it. Think one batch lasts for about two weeks depending on what dose you are using. I don’t have a ton but if you want to try it you are more then welcome. I know what you are going through and it is I hard!!
April 11, 2013 at 7:41 am #72019AnonymousInactiveAlso what formula is he on? That could also be a change to make. I tried everything and then we wound up on elecare, which made a huge difference also!
April 12, 2013 at 8:35 am #72028AnonymousInactiveThat is so kind of you to offer. I would hate to take it from you. Are you still using it? Or have you made the new mix?
April 12, 2013 at 6:57 pm #72032AnonymousInactiveI’m still using it. But I bought plenty before they went out of business. What I was thinking was if you tried this and you saw a difference then you would know that the homemade mixture would work… It is the same thing. The only thing is I only know how to make it with Prilosec, which I would suggest switching to anyway if you are already experiencing sleep issues with the Prevacid. Our sleep issues got worse the longer he was on it. He is waking up now but it is not from reflux or the medicine, he just doesn’t know how to put himself back to sleep on his own… I believe from his reflux days I was always rushing to him and now he is used to it… But that is a whole different ball game. He will only wake up once or twice maybe a night. On Prevacid it was almost every two hours sometimes every hour! Plus he was still in pain I personally hated the Prevacid. The Prilosec was a big change for us! Let me know. I really have been where you are and it is so tough!
