InactiveI have a 10 week old who has had reflux since birth and things are not getting any better. We’ve done everything possible and she still can’t hold things down. She’s gaining weight, so we can’t really get any further help from the pediatrician! But of course, gaining weight doesn’t mean we aren’t going though hell!
I was wondering if there are any exercises for infants to strengthen the LES? Will it strengthen faster if I do more tummy time with her, to get her back and neck stronger?? I really haven’t done that much, because I can’t ever put her down without her puking!!!
I’ve searched the internet but can’t really find much.
Any thoughts are appreciated!

Keymastergroupie intro:
it’s loong, but it will truly help you!refer back to it often!anyway, GERD can be caused by immature LES and or protein intolerances and/or allergies…you can’t strenghten LES, it has to develop & mature on it’s own…October 8, 2010 at 9:55 pm #67128Anonymous
InactiveThank you, Laura!
We’ve been through it all–our first child, who is now 8, went through all of this, so we were familiar with all of the techniques. With this one, we were already inclining and propping her on her side *in the hospital*!!! She was spitting up and choking before she even had much to eat!
We’ve been on Zantac since about 2 weeks, and it has helped with the discomfort, but the regurgitation is still there and *constant* and she takes 2-3 hours for her stomach to settle (which then is close to her next need for a bottle :/).
We’ve gone from regular formulas, to Good Start milk-based, to soy, and now Good Start soy, and while it is better, it’s not good. Also, we are fighting the typical constipation fight with soy–we put corn syrup in *every* bottle. I hate hate hate it, but it’s the only thing we can do right now. Juices upset her sensitive stomach and she’s too young for things like Miralax. I haven’t asked my ped about Mylanta, but my guess is he would not suggest it.
We are at our wits end. She can’t go in any sort of seat and I have a 6.5 and 8.5 year old for whom I need to be out and about quite often. It is virtually impossible with this little one! I don’t know what to do next!
We’ve asked the ped for a referral to a PG, so hopefully we’ll get better answers.
With all of that, I’m guessing she just has a weak LES, since she does this through eating and almost the entire time between feedings. Curiously, though, she has one “good” bottle and that is the one in the middle of the night. We still have to hold her upright and make sure all air is out, but it only takes one hour vs. 2-3 in the daytime. I’m not sure what that means, but hopefully the PG will be able to glean something from that!
Oh, I forgot to add, we tried the elemental formulas with my first daughter and they were awful. The smell made me gag and I couldn’t bare to feed it to her. This time, I was afraid we’d have to go to those. Our ped did recommend them, and gave us a sample of Nutramigen. For the first 24 hours we added just 25-50% to her regular formula and she was AWFUL! It seemed to upset her SO badly, so we immediately stopped and stayed on soy. I’m not sure if maybe Alimentum would be different, but I’m honestly afraid to try. lrlt20002010-10-08 21:57:55

KeymasterI am not a doctor and I can’t tell you what to do. I can only tell you my own experiences and all that I’ve learned by being on this board for seven (7!) years now…
mylanta cherry supreme is safe fro even newborns. it should be this ‘kind’ whether it’s the actual mylanta brand or a store brand equivalent- it should not have aluminum listed in the ingredients. there are many varieities, but there IS one kind that does not contain aluminum.as for your ped, I (wee!) have learned that sometimes it’s better not to ask, but, rather, to TELL. the dosing for mylanta is give in 1ml increments, up to 5ml over the course of a 24hr period. if you see loose stools, back off. this might avtually help you avoid the corn syrup (which you say you hate….maybe you won’t hate giving mylanta…)as for the zantac, figure out the proper dose and TELL doctor. from this link, you can learn proper dose and HOW to ASK pharmacist about it. then, you can TELL dr.check zantac dose, it most likely can be increased- it can go up to 10mgs per kilo- don’t just take my word on this, read here:

InactiveOMG, I CAN’T FIND MYLANTA CHERRY SUPREME ANYWHERE!!!! I went to CVS, Walgreens, Target, our grocery store, and no one has it!!! Why the heck is that?
Can you tell me what exactly is in it? Is it the same ingredients as in say Tums, an equal dose of which I could crush up?

InactiveOh, and according to the reflux dosing information referenced here, we are on a *very* conservative dose! Looks like it works out to be about 4.8mg/k/d :/

Keymasterfrom this link:
“As a pharmacist, I have a handy little electronic device called an ipharmacist which is updated regularly with all the current dosing. I have just checked it and this is what it says for oral pediatric dosing of zantac:Duodenal and gastric ulcer: children 1 month to 16 years: 2-4 mg/kg/day divided twice daily to a maximum dose of 300 mg/day
GERD and erosive esophagitis: children 1 month to 16 years: 5-10 mg/kg/day divided twice daily. GERD max dosage: 300 mg/day. erosive esophagitis max dosage: 600 mg/day”
so, what you might decide to do is:
head over to your pharmacist, smile
, ask her/him if s/he uses theipharmacist and to please humour you and look up the dose for zantac.ask if there are TWO doses, one used for Duodenal and gastric ulcer & one used forGERD and erosive esophagitisThen, with this knowledge, FAX YOUR DOCTOR.stick to the facts (no feelings and no rambling emotions)
state current meds, doses, symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
follow up by calling office to say fax was sent
