Losec -Omeprazole

Hi

Just wondering if anyone has ideas on how to give a four month old losec- the Pead prescribed tablets and said to disolve in water but they seem to be unpalatable. She was on Zantac and i had no difficulty giving this to her.

maybe you can ask for the capsules and order caracream from marci-kids.com.its a buffer which makes it into an immediate release suspension and so you dont have to time it with meals or give on an empty stomach. its also caramel flavored and many babies like taking it.

Thanks for that. Unfortunatley, i don’t think it comes in capsules in Aus. I have contacted the manufacturer to see what they say. At this stage I am dividing them into quarters, popping them into her mouth and giving her a drink. She seems to be swallowing them!

Hi there. We’re in Canada and we get the capsules here, and our systems seem pretty similar. Are you giving the MUPS, or the white tablet?

In Australia we only have the enteric coated tablets so you need to dissolve the tablet in a little water and then use a syringe or eye dropper to feed it to your baby. Try not to use too much water and make sure to suck up all the little beads into the syringe.

Good luck – make sure you get a high enough dose to make a difference, doctors in Aus are extremely conservative when it comes to dosage.

Thanks for that, I find that a lot of the beads end up staying in the syringe.

Did you give with feed or before/after. Seems to be competeing schools of thought on this- including manufacturer who says before or with food?

She is only on a 10 mg dose per day but seems to be doing well on it. In fact Zantac was working well to but I found her bowel movements were dark green, exceptionally runny and “burning”. Can’t say that has changed much on the Losec. Although she is also on Pepti-Junior which may impact the bowel motions a bit!

you have to give PPI”s on an empty stomach 30 min before a meal.

The pepti jnr will give runny army green poo. The zantac or losec wont really impact this. When you start solids they will change again too. If you are still having problems with reflux then speak to your doctor about Neocate or Elecare as we had to move to these type of formulas before we saw a difference.

I know what you mean about the beads in the syringe, it is so frustrating. The other thing you could try is breaking the tablet into 2 5mg doses and give morning and night, that way there is less beads to deal with. Always give half an hour before a feed on a empty stomach.

We had a trial of Zantac (unsuccessfully) and her poos actually returned to normal- ie nice mustard collared and semi-solid. Even on pepti junior. We did this to see if it was really just a milk allergy. Unfortunately the reflux just returned.

We then did a trial of Pepti-Junior and on Zantac to see if it was only reflux. Anyway, she reacted to the normal formula but in the 48 hours we were of Pepti Junior the poos started to solidify again.

We came to the conclusions that a) she does have reflux and b) she does have a milk allergy and c) its probably the combination that makes her poos so bad- the really burn her little butt!

The Zantac was actually working really well and we only decided to go with the Losec to see if it helped the poos. So far it has been more trouble than it is worth!!!!!!

We give it 2 x day but it is hard to do the 30 minute thing like a lot of people said because she is on the Sleep, feed, play routine and doesn’t like to wait.

I emailed Marci Kids and they are going to look into sending me some caracream? which by the sounds of it should solve the problems of giving it to her.

I wonder if I should put a small amount of rice cereal into a couple of her bottles to try and solidify her poos a little- then they wouldn’t go everywhere and be so uncomfortable and burning? I know when she has done a little “fart poo” cause she screams!

Any ideas?

rice might add insult to injury?

it might be too much to add something new to her poor little sensitive system?

if you do add rice, make sure it’s a brand of cereal that does not contain any added milk or soy…

how old is your lo? (if you go to the upper right hand corner of the screen & click ‘settings’ and then click ‘profile’ you can put information in your ‘signature’ so that we can keep track of these things & not keep asking you the same questions, like what age, meds/doses/forms, formula/breastfeeding, etc)

and, if it’s a milk allergy or intolerance, chances are that soy will affect her as well- so is she on an elemental formula?

She is on pepti-junior- semi-elemental- now wondering if i should ask pead to go the next step. so hard to tell what’s what! maybe i will give losec 2 weeks and if no change…… I think she is still reacting- she moans and groans- her stomach goes hard (helps if I massage but not too soon otherwise it increases her reflux!) and goes red around the eyes?

Do others feel like they are stalking their pead?

We are lucky in Aus- as we have a public health system and all this stuff is pretty cheap eg on script 8 x tins cost $30 Aus $. Must be hard in US.
