InactiveJust wanted to post this so that other parents are aware.
My DD is 12 weeks old, diagnosed with reflux at 5 weeks. She was put on Losec 1ml 2x per day. During that time she was extremely colicky and would never sleep. We thought it was genuine colic, or the reflux or milk/soy allergy. We went onto Zantac and off dairy and things calmed down substantially. I thought that the dairy allergy was why she was so colicky at the beginning so we went back on the Losec because it suppressed the reflux better. It turns out that she went back to the extremely colicky behaviour and insomia just like at the beginning. She was a different baby with a colicky cry and alternated between being frantic and sort of zoned out but unable to sleep for the time she was on it. It’s been out of her system for a few hours now and she is already better. I know such side effects are rare but just wanted to let you all know that it can happen and to consider that your baby’s behavior may be affected by the Losec/omeprazole. IT was really aweful to know that the Losec was causing this in the first place and then to have seen it again recently.Good Luck,RmomSeptember 11, 2009 at 5:19 pm #63846Anonymous
InactiveRmom,

Inactiveyes, can cause tummy cramping, and if i remember correctly, headaches? it is all trial and error…..we had a horrible reaction with solutabs, but did great on prevacid packets (i don’t think they even make anymore) and the other on compounded prilosec…..

InactiveAnn,
I’m sorry you had to go through many trial and error. I know exactly how stressful it can be. MY DD was on Prevacid solutab, did good on it for 2 month, now it’s not working on her. It’s been hell for the last few days. Hopefully Zenegrid works on her, and I’m praying it wont have many effects.September 11, 2009 at 5:46 pm #63849Anonymous
Inactivehang in there! both of my refluxers are recovered at this point, but my older one is still milk/soy protein sensitive. I just can’t break away as i remember how bad it was and hope i can still offer some advice…. also i still come here for advice on just about anything, so i think i am a lifer! there are a few of us that have been around years now…
I hope the zegrid works for you guys!!!September 11, 2009 at 5:49 pm #63850Anonymous
Inactivehi Ann,
Thank you for your support. My DD is also allergic to cow and soy protein. She’s my first baby and as you already know, it is not easy to deal with.
Anyway, I’m glad your babies grew out of reflux. When did they grow out of it?September 11, 2009 at 6:12 pm #63851Anonymous
InactiveDylan at 2.5 and Carter at about a year old…. all babies are different but I think a lot here are usually about a year. BUT, that being said, that is when we could get them off of meds. With Dylan (as he was my first) took me over 7 months to figure it out when I finally found this site. the Neocate formula was the biggest piece for both of my boys and Carter was only about 3 months old when we finally got the right combo of meds and formula, so he was a very happy baby from that point on. I didn’t mind them being on meds and the specialized formula, I just didn’t like when they were in pain. Lots of laundry, but I would do that 10 times over than have them in pain and not sleeping…..

InactiveAnn,
I started Zegerid (same compound as losec) on my daughter last night and she seems fine so far. No reactions, but no improvement either.
I totally agree with you on chosing to do more laundry than having them in pain.November 2, 2009 at 9:12 pm #64426Anonymous
InactiveRMom-I’m just searching the boards and came across this post. I’m wondering if my 2.5 month old is reacting like yours did to the omeprazole?? It’s like he has insomnia now and gets so tired but just will NOT sleep! His sleep has never been good to begin with but now it’s worse! Today he was up for 4 hours and wouldn’t even fall asleep with me holding/bouncing him. I put him in his swing and seemed like he wanted to sleep so bad but he just kept moaning with his eyes open. Everything is just so frustrating right now and I wish we could just find the magic solution!
How are things going with your LO now?November 2, 2009 at 9:37 pm #64427hellbennt
Keymasternot Rmom, but just wanted to point out that the dose that her baby was on was low…and, it was a compound…it might (might!) ‘just’ be that her baby did worse bcse it was as if her baby wasn’t medicated while on that particular med (& form of med)….something to consider…
I’m not saying babies don’t have reactions! it’s just hard to tell when they are on low doses (and perhaps improperly made forms of meds)…hang in there!
ps: just read the post again and it does say baby was better off of the meds…it can happen…it’s so hard to get meds right! Let us know how we can help

InactiveAccording to the “big blue book” 🙂 on medications an insomnia like reaction can happen for 1 in 1000 people who are on omeprazole. It sounds like our LO”s have been a couple of those rare people! We took our DD off of it as soon as we figured it out. She was better within a week and was sleeping much better and not crying constantly anymore (from being exhausted). She was put on Zantac and is fairing just fine with it, still a little regurgitation into her throat sometimes but no pain and no thrashing in sleep anymore. Also, after going off the omeprazole her poop went from dark blackish green back to yellow and seedy like it should be.
It would be worth trying a different med. I totally know where you’re coming from and wish you the best!RmomNovember 3, 2009 at 1:13 pm #64430Anonymous
InactiveHi There,
As I’ve noted in a different reply the reaction to the omeprazole that kept my baby awake happens for 1 in a 1000 people who take it. This is according to the book on medications that they have at pharmacies. So it’s less a reaction than an actual side effect that happens for some people. Thanks for the input though,Rmom -
