InactivePaige has had a bit of a reflux flare-up over the last 2 weeks (thanks to having the stomach flu 2 & 1/2 weeks ago) so yesterday I gave her 2 doses of Maalox Nighttime, 2 mL each time. The Maalox Nighttime contains calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and sodium alginate, so it is essentially like Mylanta plus Gaviscon. Now this morning, she had some mucus in her stool. Other than the Maalox, nothing has changed. I was wondering if any other babes had mucus in their stool after trying Maalox, Mylanta, or Gaviscon? I certainly can’t say for sure it was the Maalox, but nothing else has changed. I’m going to do a little research to see if there is any soy or other possible offender in the Maalox Nighttime as well. I would appreciate any insight. Thanks so much!

InactiveHmmm….here are the ingredients I found on the Maalox web page – I don’t see anything that could upset her system. But maybe I’m missing something.

Medicinal Ingredients: Each 5 mL teaspoon contains calcium carbonate 300 mg, magnesium carbonate 125 mg and sodium alginate 275 mg.Non-medicinal Ingredients: calcium cyclamate (sweetener), D&C Yellow No. 10, FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Yellow No. 6, flavour, methylparaben, peppermint oil, propylparaben, silicon dioxide, sodium bicarbonate, sorbitol, water, xanthan gum.

InactiveSheri,
I THINK??? I saw a list of other names for SOY and zantham gum was on it. I’m not sure about this, but maybe that’s what it is???

InactiveWell, I hadn’t used the Maalox in about 10 days, but Paige’s reflux has flared up once again so I gave her one dose last night. Then today, she’s had 2 mucusy diapers again. There hadn’t been any since the last time I used the Maalox. So I’m assuming she is reacting to it?! I just can’t tell what she may be reacting to. Perhaps a dye? or the sweetener? I researched propylparaben and xanthan gum and they didn’t raise any red flags…. I’m perplexed, and disappointed.

InactiveI need serious help….and advise….
My 11 week old son John Callan has been having digestive problems since day 3. long story short, he is on his 5th formula – Elecare. He had been on cow’s milk for 9 weeks and was diagonosed with GERD at Texas Children’s Hospital on March 10th. He was initially on Zantac at first, 5.3 ml 4 times a day by an emergency room pede because he had a significant amount of blood in his poop one morning (he has had bloody diapers the entire time on cow’s milk – pede’s said “it was NORMAL and he had colic and to DEAL WITH IT until it went away) until he had an appointment with a specialist who put him on Prevacid but only 7.5 mg a day. I couldn’t get the prevacid in him and went back to Zantac in his bottles. It worked for 2 weeks. The last 3 days he is having bad attaks CONSTANTLY. I gave him prevacid this morning and spoke to a nurse at Texas children’s but she said I shouldn’t increase the dose. I asked about the acid reflux test but haven’t heard back from her. Can anyone guide me for now to give him some relief? Mylanta? How much? What kind? Please help me. Everytime I don’t think I have one more tear to cry they just pour out. I would light myself on fire if I know that would make him smile…

Inactivehi!
have you seen marci-kids.com? that is the midwest acid reflux childrens institute. they have research that shows infats need higher, more frequent PPI doses. for example, my son was started on 24 mg a day at 3 months old. he does not respond to lower doses. also, zantac did nothing for his pain. is your baby in pain?
blood in poop is NOT normal. that ped was an idiot! that is a sign that your baby cannot handle milk/soy proteins. im really sorry you had to deal with bad doctors, we did too.
please read through the medications at marci-kids.com and perhaps print off the info and share with the doctors.
in the meantime, mylanta is ok to use, but is not a permanent solution to acid damaging the esophogus.
did the elecare stop blood/mucous in the diapers?

Inactiveoh yeah, and with the prevacid, wha form do you have? solutabs and capusles must be given on an empty stomach and followed with a full meal 30-60 min later in order to be effective.

Inactive“JohnCallanPatin” – I’ve started a posting for you in the “HELP” section, hopefully more people will see it there, and chime in. I’m just feeding Paige right now, but I will reply in the HELP posting as soon as I can. Here’s the link:

InactiveThank you for responding. I feel like I’m at wits end and have no one who understands what this is like. The Elecare took care of the bloody poops – thank you GOD!!!! I need a good dr who will LISTEN. I am searching my ins co web site now.
I have the solutabs. I will give it to him as you described. The GI doctor didn’t tell me that…thank you. he was also on carafate for 2 weeks too. Didn’t help. I am so FRUSTRATED WITH THESE DRS!
How much mylanta should I give him? He is 11 weeks, 12.1 pounds. Do you think I should go ahead and give him two 7.5 mg doses????
