InactiveJust wondering if anyone’s baby/child has shown an allergy to a PPI? Not sure what’s going on with Reid, but considering the possibility that he might be allergic to Prevacid or something in it.
We started on the Prevacid FasTabs (I think they’re called something a little different in the US). On day 12 I noticed rough patchy “hives” all over his body and he was REALLY fussy. Couldn’t settle down to sleep all night. The next day I switched him to Prevacid capsules, thinking it may be an additive in the FasTabs, perhaps a flavouring, color, binder, aspartame? I also started giving him some Benadryl. He started doing a bit better. AFter 5 days, I stopped the Benadryl to see if he was doing alright without it. Then he got really fussy again, and again not settling to sleep. Not reflux symptoms, just a super fussy baby. We’re now on day 9 of the capsules and he still has the hives. I’m going to give it some more time to see if they go away, but I’m wondering if perhaps he’s reacting to the lansoprasole itself. And I’ve restarted the Benadryl.Has anyone else had a child show an allergy to a PPI? Laura, do you recall seeing anyone mention it over the years? I wonder if switching to Losec (Prilosec in the US) might help….January 21, 2011 at 11:27 am #67681hellbennt
Keymasterthe only thing people mentioned were the tabs, as you mentioned…
people w/ highly sensitive babies had success w/ the capsules-what are you giving the beads from the capsules with? applesauce? could he be reacting to the apples? Kim (pkkb)’s dd couldn’t handle apples…January 21, 2011 at 12:11 pm #67683Anonymous
InactiveActually I’m sprinkling the beads onto his tongue then syringing some water to wash them down. So far, it’s working well! I wanted to avoid any foods as he has pretty bad MFPI (even TED failed).
Thanks Laura for your reply. I’ll keep my eye on it and give it some more time. The hives definately haven’t gotten any better yet…

Keymasterfrom everything I’ve read, you need the acid of some applesauce (or something) to get the meds working-but you’re the pharmacist, lol!
I tell people to give on an empty stomach w/ a tsp of applesauce, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later…
erin tried pears maybe (as they’re on the TED)?January 21, 2011 at 6:05 pm #67690Anonymous
InactiveI was going by this:
“DR PPIs should taken with water or sprinkled over an acidic food such as apple sauce or yogurt.”from here:My impression, from reading it, is that if a delayed release PPI is given with a spoonful of food, that it needs to be an acidic food so as to not disrupt the enteric coating. But that water alone would be alright as well, as the stomach is very acidic and the enteric coating will remain intact until the drug reaches the higher pH of the duodenum.January 22, 2011 at 9:34 am #67694Anonymous
InactiveWell, to update on the rash/hives… today they are WORSE. Ugh. It’s been 10 days on the prevacid capsules. We were up every hour last night and the night before… just fussing. Reflux is better – he’s eating great and not screaming with spit ups. Just very fussy, squirmy and can’t stay asleep, I think because of the rash.
Today we’re going to try and switch to losec (omeprazole). I hope and pray that is better, and he’s not allergic to all PPIs!!January 22, 2011 at 6:28 pm #67697Anonymous
InactiveI’ve never heard of a reaction to the capsules alone, but it sounds like that’s the problem. We had an issue with the lactose in the solutabs (which sounds like they are your fastabs). I hope that you have better luck with the losec!
