InactiveI remember doing all this research when I was trying to advocate for the right medication with Isaac, but it seems like a lot has changed in 4 years with over the counter stuff etc…
Does anyone have a straight up opinion about what is the easiest/best way to prescribe/administer PPI’s now?
Silas has gotten a little relief from the zantac/mylanta combo, but not enough (I don’t think???). I keep wondering what my expectations should be and what is “normal”. With Isaac things were so clear because he ultimately just refused feedings, lost weight, etc… Silas continues to gain fine, doesn’t cry a lot during the day (more inconsolable crying in the evening- particularly at any evening feedings), but yet, he almost always seems very uncomfortable with feedings and doesn’t “readily” nurse. Babies should be comfortable eating- right? And they shouldn’t cry after burping, right? I keep hoping that maybe I’m just more aware this time around and am catching it before he completely refuses feedings.
Anyways, back to the medication. I ended up using Zegerid with Isaac (20mg packets- this was before 40’s were out). Silas however is getting loose stools from the mylanta— so I now don’t know if Zegerid is the best option for him given you need to mix with mylanta.
I’ve gone back to read the groupie intro (Laura- you truly are amazing!), prevacid 101 etc…. but still even having done this before, so much info to absorb again and in my exhaustion/desperation am looking to see if anyone has an opinion re best PPI situation b/c I am all about advocating and will get whatever I need to get!
Ped prescribed Prevacid today— solutabs. I’m doing elimination diet so am worried about the asparateme and lactose. Is it best to get OTC prevacid or prilosec and mix yourself? Is that the optimal route or just a route when something else is unavailable?
thanks everyone!!!!!

Keymasterhmm…
well I think people do it themselves for two reasons:
1) want to take matters into their own hands re: dose
2) costdepending on your insurance, if you were to go the Bufferbabies route, it might be less expensive to get a rx for prevacid (whatever form the bufferbabies folks tell you, I do believe it’s capsules, at least that’s how it was for us but that was a long time ago, lol) than it is to buy it OTC.
I don’t think there’s a way to get the bufferbabies covered by insurance; it’s an out-of-pocket expense
zegerid is a rx
and, I don’t think you have to use mylanta? some have had success w/ using tums instead…you could do a search…July 24, 2010 at 4:09 pm #66793Anonymous
InactiveI don’t know much but here is what we went through with medication:
Zantac – my son spit this out typicallyPrevacid Carbonate Solution – he hated this medication and spit it outPrevacid Solutabs – we put the tablet into a syringe, add 1 – 2 mg of water and allow it to mix insite the syringe, then feed him. It takes kind of like strawberries. He likes the taste and usually takes without problems…July 28, 2010 at 8:11 am #66802Anonymous
InactiveHi Goldie,
My DD was prescribed omeprazole which was made up into a solution by a compounding chemist. I read everything about how it doesn’t really work when made up into a solution. I talked to the pharmacist who assured me it was made correctly. After 3 weeks I didn’t see any improvement.
I decided to try emptying the capsules into some pear puree and feeding her from a spoon (she was 4 months but babies younger than this can take it from a spoon). Within 4 days she was a different child – smily, happy, no crying!
I also conviced doctor to give her a much higher dose than originally prescribed – in line with the merci-kids dosing schedule.
I was also giving her motilium (domperadone) 3 times a day half an hour before the omeprazole. I have run out of this and am on holidays in Australia and you can’t get it here. I have noticed that she is not doing as well without the motilium. When I get back home I will definately put her back on this as I believe this combo worked really well.
Good luck!

InactiveCaracream 2 is now available through the Reflux Solutions Lab. I have been using the regular Caracream with Prevacid capsules for a year. Just changed to the Caracream 2 a few weeks ago. You use with Zegrid OTC which already has the sodium bicarbonate in it which makes your Caracream packets a lot less expensive. Dr. Phillip has done it again!!
