Around 6 months of actual age and after the first round of vaccines our son Jon refused to drink milk. We brought him to our pediatrician who suspected silent reflux and prescribed zantac. After 1 month on the medication, feeding was still very difficult. We relied om nighttime “dreamfeeding” for Jon to get his daily requirements. Then Jon completely refused to drink again. We went back to the doctor but got brushed off. We were told he was gaining weight and that we should just wait it out…they increased the zantac dose again…
Two days later, we had to call 911 because jon was having episodes of loosing consciousness after drinking milk. It took a week of hospitalisation and multiple tests to diagnose laryngospasms caused by silent reflux.
We tried every PPI- all worked for about a week then led to vomiting and abdominal cramps. We also tries domperidone as a prokinetic which made the laryngospasm episodes worse! Our last option: nexxium. Thank goodness – it worked. we switched to a pre-digested hypoallergenic formula (Alimentum)
Our feeding specialist also prescribed cyproheptidine as an appetite stimulant with prokinetic effect. This has done wonders for jon’s vomiting and willingness to drink & eat. The boys are 9 months now and we are still waitng for Jon to outgrow this reflux but at least it is now managed with the proper medications.

The pancreas is what makes digestive enzymes and puts them in our stomach to break down the food we eat. All foods have enzymes in them but anytime a food is cooked or processed it kills the enzymes. With our diets today of mostly cooked and processed foods it’s hard for our pancreas to be able to produce enough enzymes. Without enough enzymes in the stomach to break down the food the only thing our stomach knows to do is produce more acid to try to break it down. Too much acid in the stomach will cause heart burn, acid reflux, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.
If a parent has a pancreas that isn’t producing enough enzymes then it is possible that their children can be born with a pancreas that doesn’t work well either. If the mother will take a supplement of enzymes and probiotics while pregnant she will pass these on to her baby and have a baby with a healthy digestive system.
Probiotics are the good, live bacteria that live in our body. One of the things they do is coat and protect our entire digestive tract (and also the ears and nose). When the stomach produces too much acid then it is forced up the esophagus and down the intestines and will kill probiotics. (Antibiotics also kill probiotics.) When the probiotics are depleted then the acid is traveling right up next to the esophagus and intestines with no protection. This is often why reflux burns so badly and why the intestines will sometimes bleed.
You can read more on my blog. (see signature) I have a page titled “How to choose the right kind of probiotic/enzyme supplement” if you are interested in trying them.
