InactiveHow do you know if the meds are really working?
My son’s worst time is about 2 – 3 hours after he eats. He begins grunting, rutching around, and wakes up. Sometimes he will burp and swallow hard and is able to go back to sleep within 15 minutes.Other times he wakes crying, arching his back, can’t quite clear his reflux and it takes us a long time to get him settled and back asleep. We are assuming that we have not yet found the right dosage for him. When we do, will he be able to sleep through this refluxing? Or will it always wake him up – despite the pain being gone?Thank youNovember 5, 2007 at 4:49 pm #45040Anonymous
InactiveStacey, I replied to your other post. I wonder if there are two issues- one being that the dose is too low and the other being that it’s a compound. Check out the thread about pharmacy compounded PPIs stickied under the medications forum. It’s really hard to get the pharmacy to make the compound correctly and if they don’t then the meds might not work. Make sure that there’s NO flavourings at all, enough buffer and that each dose is at least 3.5ml. We really had an impossible time with the compound. You might also want to look into zegerid- it’s a properly compounded omeprazole suspension.

Keymasterwhen the meds & med dose are ‘right’ you will literally have a NEW baby. It’s hard to explain, but it’s true (kind of how you ‘know’ when you’ve gone into labor or how you ‘know’ that you are going to marry the person you want to marry- ok not quite but I don’t know how else to explain it, LOL

)…you ask if your baby will be able to sleep? every baby is different. my baby had SEVERE GERD and was able to sleep at night. naps, well, let’s not discourage you
…but really it all depends- you are right in that the actual act of refluxing, even if it isn’t painful, can be bothersome to some babies. whether it is bothersome enought to effect sleep, I’m not sure anyone can predict. however, I would think that once a baby is ‘properly’ medicated there is so much relief that the poor thing finally sleeps

InactiveEvery mom that I have talked to has said that same thing… “once you find the right medication, you’ll have a whole new baby.”
We are still waiting…..We feel terrible that Collin has to endure this pain.I have a call in to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to try another pedi GI.We are also contacting our current GI and “demanding” that Collin’s medication be upped.Thank you for your inputNovember 6, 2007 at 12:34 pm #45092Anonymous
InactiveI hope that you can find something to make Collin more comfortable. Unlike some other moms on this site, I can’t say that even at VERY high doses of prevacid, we ever had a “whole new baby”. Even when Hailey was comfortable, she still wasn’t completely comfortable or happy and she still had feeding problems.
BUT, I think that getting the meds sorted out is always a good first step. If that doesn’t do the trick completely, then you might want to consider food allergies/intolerances i.e. MSPI and see if dietary changes can fill in the missing piece of the puzzle.Good luck. -
