InactiveHow many ounces of milk a day were your little ones drinking before you decided that they could handle it? My goal is to get Sarah up to 15 ounces per day at least. My question is, do I have to keep GRADUALLY increasing it every few weeks until we’re eventually at 15 ounces? I’m afraid that will take us until Christmas!
Is there a magic number of ounces that I should feel confident with and just increase it as much as I want from there? Or continue to increase gradually every few weeks? Ideas? We’re up to 5-6 ounces per day right now. Thanks!

Keymasterwell, how is she handling cheese and yogurt? if she can handle calcium from food products (broccoli, too), and also by drinking some, then I don’t think you have to count ounces of milk?
this is a rough one and I actually was going to post some milk questions as well, lol…I’m not sure why I’m worried, since I’ve been through this already (transitioning to milk), and Jonah was fine drinking water and eating a lot of dairy products until he ‘liked’ milk at about 18months…July 8, 2007 at 10:02 am #38822Anonymous
InactiveSarah is doing great with dairy products. She has 4oz of yogurt everyday, sometimes grilled cheese, she had mac and cheese last night…so far so good! I’d like to be done with alimentum so I’m hoping to completely switch to milk soon. She drinks about 13oz of alimentum a day (5oz bottle and 8oz bottle) If I could get her to drink that much milk instead, I’d be happy. I’d been giving her 4-5 ounces of milk in the afternoon but started giving her 6oz of milk first thing in the morning now in place of her morning alimentum. I’m just wondering how soon I can replace ALL the alimentum. So you think as long as she’s getting calcium from other places she’ll be fine to lose all alimentum? Once I know Sarah is drinking enough milk to be done with her alimentum and she’s doing great with it, I want to continue our wean from meds…I guess that’s why I’m a little impatient with the milk.

It is a stressful topic! I hope that Ari does great as well. Wait, when is his birthday??? SOON? Did we miss it? I know it’s in July…Are you wanting to try to introduce it soon? Keep us posted!

KeymasterI’ve introdcued milk to Ari and he’ll sip at it….for some reason I’m ok w/ him sipping water throughout the day, but I have it in my head that I’d like him to drink some substantial ounces of milk at a time…
I’m still nursing him and right now it’s 4 times a day- before his 2 naps, before bed & 1st thing in the a.m. When I go back to work (August 16th), I will nurse him 3 times a day (I know myself, I’ll wind up breaking down at the sitter’s house & nurse him when I pick him up) and work to get it down to 2 times a day and then once and then be done (I weaned Jonah at 15months but somehow I get a feeling I might go longer with this little guy?)so for me, the question is what to leave at the sitters? I think a bottle, since I know he’ll drink from one (meaning I’ll let her transition him to the sippy after he’s adjusted to her, etc) but I’m not sure of what? I know he’ll drink formula so again, maybe let her transition him from formula to milk in the bottle and then to a sippy? this means it’ll take time, but I really don’t believe that there’s a set time for the end of bottles and if he’s used to it and maybe it brings him comfort while I’m not there, then I don’t care too much about the transition to sippy…ok not sure I made sense but trying to answer your question
oh & jonah & ari have their birthday july 17(!)as for sarah, I think ounces of liquid are important- not sure that I believe that they need to be from milk? so maybe ‘other’ milk? this is what I’m wondering about…also when jonah didn’t drink milk, it was 3 months of drinking some milk & eating lots of dairy/calcium (I weaned him at 15 months & then at 18 months he’d drink a cup of milk at lunch and dinner I think it was- maybe a late afternoon cup too)July 8, 2007 at 10:53 am #38826Anonymous
InactiveI like your ideas for transitioning Ari to the sitter. Just follow his lead and go from there! Some of our greatest transitions have taken place at the sitter’s house…sometimes it’s just easier that way! SHE got Sarah to sleep unswaddled…SHE got Sarah to really drink well from the sippy…and now I’m thinking SHE will do a great job teaching Sarah to spoon feed herself! LOL!! I also agree that you need to wean him from breastfeeding when you’re comfortable with it. I also agree…who cares how long it takes. Whatever works for your family!
That’s also funny what you said about not sipping milk…I feel the same way! I don’t care if she sips her water all day but I want her to sit and DRINK her milk! Why is that!?!?!

Thanks again Laura! Can’t believe Ari’s (and Jonah’s) birthdays are coming up so fast! WOW!

InactiveI left it to the sitter too!
Like Laura, I was nursing Claire in the morning and before bed from about 12 months on.. She got a bottle of bm at the sitters after her morning nap and just before lunch time. She got another bottle after her afternoon nap. When we switched to a sippy, she just gave it to her, almost like a bottle. Held her until she drank it all, etc. And did the same thing when we switched to milk. I did the same with her right before dinner. Held her and tried to get her to drink as much as possible before we sat down to eat. As she got older and drank more on her own, I just let her have it at meal times and reminded her often to keep drinking from it.I think though, like Jonah, it was quite awhile before I felt like she was really drinking enough on her own. She ate a lot of broccoli, cheese and yogurt too! Actually, I STILL have to remind her to drink all of her milk.

InactiveAidan drinks exactly ZERO ounces of milk. He eats cheese and yogurt and drinks cranberry juice with calcium, and whatever other calcium fortified foods I can get into him-goldfish, cheerios, and occasionally soy milk (he’ll only drink that with a TON of strawberry nesquick). He has hated plain milk from the first moment he tried it! Which actually works out nicely, his excema flared up and his tummy flipped out when I first tried to transition him at a year.
I’m not concerned though, his brother never drank milk. I’m pretty sure he would drink it all day if I put that nesquick in it, but he can’t tolerate it at all, and too much of the soy stuff constipates him-which was good to find out, I use that to counteract what I call “teething tummy”-I know the nesquick has calcium in it, which is the only reason I’m ok with adding it to the silk.Aidansmom792007-07-08 17:10:56

InactiveThanks everyone! It does make me feel better to know that she doesn’t HAVE to have milk if she’s eating a balanced diet…I just don’t know at what point I can call the milk trial a “SUCCESS” and be able to give her as much as I want (or she wants…she’s usually whining for more after she finishes). Ya know? Any ideas?

InactiveIf she’s done well so far I’d give her as much as she wants. You’ll know if it turns out to be a problem. With Kaelyn we realized it fairly quickly.
