InactiveOkay, I’m sure you guys are sick of my questions by now, but I am desperatly trying to figure out why Justice is not sleeping well. Today he had mik come out of his nose. Is that a sign that the reflux is back? He did it a few times before he was on Zegerid. Not sure if it is a possible reflux sign or just normal. My first never did it and I’ve never seen another baby do it.

Inactivetrade did that a lot the first couple months. that is bad, the fluid can get into the ears and cause ear infections and sinuses and cause sinus infections.
the zegerid doesnt prevent spit up, it jsut makes it less acidic-so when you say is the reflux back?- the answer is it never left.
you just have to keep him as upright as possible.September 26, 2006 at 3:06 pm #14322Anonymous
InactiveWell it is reflux. I have seen a few babies do this. Some babies who did not care about it and others, who have GERD like Matthew or Hailey for example, would do this and cry hysterically for minutes – it is very painful to have acid come up through your nose

InactiveI love the new picture of Justice – I could just squeeze those cute little cheeks!!
Does the milk coming out of his nose bother him?

Inactivemattewmama,
well Trace is an example that it CAN be very bad. he has reaccuring ear infections because of this very thing.
some kids just get lucky and dont get infections.
but there is nothing i can do about it besides keep him upright, and even then, it still comes out of his nose sometimes.September 26, 2006 at 9:32 pm #14372Anonymous
InactiveShelby,
As Thais already mentioned, Hailey has had this happen to her quite a few times, and unfortunately, she falls into the group of babies who get HYSTERICAL when it happened. It started when she was a few weeks old, and then happened on and off since then. I know that PPIs only stop acid production, but we’ve noticed a direct relationship between the reflux being well controlled and reflux flareups. When she’s sick, it’s more likely to happen. Someone once equated it for me to the burning sensation of getting chlorine in your nose. How does Justice react when it happens? As I said, Hailey was always inconsolable and would end up projectile puking all over the place afterwards. Thankfully though, it never caused an infection for her and really hasn’t caused any issues other the scare and discomfort of it. Like Thais’ doctor, our doc always said that it was just a reflux thing, but that it wasn’t a big issue, but I’d mention to Justice’s doc if you’re worried… sometimes if the spit up comes up too fast, or if they’re not entirely alert when it happens, it’s possible for it to go past the throat and up and out the nose. Like I said, our doc said not to worry about it. Nothing we did was ever able to control it other than keeping the reflux well controlled with meds. For some reason when there was less acid, everything was less irritated, the volume of fluid in the stomach was less, and her UES was able to heal a bit I guess to better keep things down. Hope it passes. It always broke my heart.

InactiveI ended up calling a friend to ask her about it. She said it is a sign of reflux. Anyway, I also asked her about something else he has been doing. 3 times now while eating he has been doing something that seems like a seizure to me. It is really hard to explain, but it is just his head and it vibrates. I can’t see his eyes and haven’t noticed his body doing anything other than go limp after. I called my ped. and they had me go immediatly to a childrens er. I sat there for 4 hours with doc. after doc. coming in and asking me what he was doing. Anyway, they are supposed to be doing an eeg on him sometime soon. I guess it all goes to show that we should trust our instincts. It scared me half to death when it happened, but I thought there was no way it could be a seizure. Maybe it wasn’t and I’m crazy, but still I should’ve trusted myself. I think the seizure type thing and his not sleeping are related. We will see.
I will let you all know what I find out.

Keymastershelby,
in the meantime, please read about Sandifer’s Syndrome (lots of info from my Groupie Intro), for sometimes these symptoms look like seizures. I’m glad you’re getting it checked out though!

InactiveIt sounds like Sandifers BUT you need to get it checked – we got a brain sonogram for Matthew when he was about that age to make sure that things were OK… good luck and keep us posted

InactiveGood luck Shelby. Please keep us posted. Hailey also had an EEG to rule out seizures. It turned out she was diagnosed with Sandifer’s (which was my guess, but I was glad to hear it wasn’t seizures.)

InactiveI read Laura’s threads on Sandifer’s and there is a mom whose baby was doing almost exactly what Justice is doing. Except it’s just his head. The only thing I notice with his body is that he is very still afterward. Will an EEG show Sandifers? For those of you that have babies with Sandifers how did it get diagnosed? Did the doc. see it happen. So far it has only happened 3x and I am the only one that has seen it. Sandifers would make sense. Today his reflux seems to really be bothering him. I don’t know though. It is all so confusing. Anyway, it would be really helpful to hear from other moms how sandifers started out with their babies and how it got diagnosed.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

InactiveI believe that the EEG is to rule out any seizures – therefore they tend to diagnose Sandifers by elimination. If no seizures show up then they will probably assume that the reflux is causing his body to respond to pain by stiffening or becoming still. I don’t thing there is a test per-se
I believe that everyone has seen different things on their children. Matthew used to bend his head one way and then we had all the arching, stiffening of the legs, throwing back body…
Someone else may be able to comment some more.
A lot of people have actually videotaped sandifers and shwon their doctors, so if you are lucky you may get him doing this…

Keymasterdr saw jonah arching and tortilitis (I can’t ever spell it!)- didnt see the ‘seizure’ stuff- rolling eyes, etc…
we knew his reflux was severe and we saw that the symptoms lessened w/ more meds…he never had an eeg
like thais mentioned, if it is seizures it’ll show up on the test- I also don’t think there’s a test for sandifer’s…
