InactiveI have finally gotten a rx for Zegerid 40mg. I have read that it can be mixed with a TUMS smoothie or Cherry Supreme. Is one better than the other? Also, is there a minimum dose of the mixture that I need to be giving in order to reach the adequate level of buffer? According to my calculations I would be giving 8mg (or 4mls) of the zegerid mixture based on my son’s wt and MARCI – Kids dosing.

Keymasteryikes I don’t know…I have the following saved from Dr Philips himself (he recommends the mylanta)
Remember to get 40mg packets only – not 20mg packets; and remember add 6.5mL water to the powder (in a syringe) and shake – then add 10mL Mylanta Cherry Supreme
remember 40mg packets not 20mg packets (because the 20mg packets and 40mg packets have the exact same amt of sodium bicarbonate) so per each mg of dose, the 20mg ends up with twice as much bicarb (too much)
Keep in refrigerator and it is stable for a week
I also found this- to explain how to use TUMS if you want:I was never able to find the Cherry Mylanta Surpreme so we use the generic CVS version. It is also aluminum free. I know many moms have had to order it online (maybe google different sites like drugstore.com and see if you can find it!) If you can’t find the Mylanta you can also mix with Tums. The Tums Quick Packs have been used frequently b/c it’s 1 quick pack per packet of zegerid…super easy…but I’ve heard several moms mentioning that they are being discontinued. Sooooo Plan C would be to crush regular tums and make your own ‘quick pack’. The quick packs contain 1000mg of calcium carbonate so I’d think you’d be ok as long as you crush that equivalent amount of reg tums.there is a third alternative to mylanta or tums:some use this hypoallergenic calcium carbonate to mix with zegerid. Here’s a link to it. I don’t know how you mix it…but you can ask Dr. Phillips. I tried to find an old thread talking about it and I wasn’t able to. Hang in there you’re doing GREAT!!!here’s about starting zegerid:It does take some time for the body to adjust. It’s sort of like a battle with the acid and meds and in the end the medicine WILL win out…but sometimes theres a rough patch between days 3-8. Hang in there…hopefully it’ll get better!!! My guess is the troubles are arising from the sodium bicarb in the zegerid…which is also in the Buffer Babies. So I’d hang tight with the zegerid for a little bit longer before switching. 🙂aha! found this:Here are the directions from Dr. Phillips:Zegerid 40mg packets, add 6.5mL tap water to 1 packet. This will make 10mL (40mg in 10mL), Do this in an oral dosing syringe (20mL size syringe preferred).
The add 10mL Mylanta Cherry Supreme to the syringe. Now you will have 20mL total volume and 40mg omeprazole. (2mg omeprazole per each mL)
This is stable in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. Shake before each dose. You can put the dose in the bottle of milk. Depends on age and weight. Must use at least 3.5mL per dose, three doses per day or don’t waste your time. Alternatively, use a Tums QuikPack in place of the Mylanta Cherry Supreme – then add enough water to make 20mL total volume.found this:This is how Dr. Phillips is saying to mix the zegerid 40mg packets: Zegerid 40mg packets, add 6.5mL tap water to 1 packet. 40mg added to 6.5mL tap water in an oral dosing syringe (20 or 30mL size syringe) then add one tums quick pack or smoothies. Then ad enough water to make 20mL total. Then after all this you will have 2mg of zegerid (omeprazole) in each mL. You can give it right before a bottle too.hellbennt2012-01-26 19:02:04

Here is a link to the calcium carbonate version if interested :).

wrote:I’ve seen a lot of posts asking for this – so here it is: (I just had Dr.P check the math.) Dr.P said he prefers LOs on 2mg/ml, but as we all know, every LO is different – so do what is best for your LO & of course what is in agreement with your Ped or GI (whoever is Rxing it). A few things to remember…
1. The total volume is the key to get the right ratio.
2. MCS or Tums or pure Calcium Carbonate powder needs to be used as a buffer. Make sure you use the exact brand name listed in the hyperlink. These have all been tested to be lead free.
3. Following mixing and dosing instructions on MARCI-Kids & of course what is in agreement with your Rx Dr.
1 Rx 40mg Zegerid packet + 16ml water + ¼ tsp. CC Powder (total 20ml solution) = 2mg/1ml
1 Rx 40mg Zegerid packet + 9ml water + ¼ tsp. CC Powder (total 13ml solution) = 3mg/1ml
1 Rx 40mg Zegerid packet + ~7.5ml water + ¼ tsp. CC Powder (total 11.5ml solution) = 3.5mg/1ml
1 Rx 40mg Zegerid packet + 6ml water + ¼ tsp. CC Powder (total 10ml solution) = 4mg/1ml
Stability: 28 days when refrigerated, 7 days at room temperature*
Prior to use, shake well.
Between each use, keep refrigerated.
TIPS:
Each LO is different – choose your buffer according to his/her needs. For us personally, we have tried all 3 buffers and we prefer to use the Pure CC powder. There is no grinding (like needed for Tums), no flavor or additives & the final mixture is very smooth.
I do not level the measuring spoon when scooping my CC powder. I do slightly more than ¼ tsp. because this is what we have found to be the best for our LO. You can use up to ½ tsp per packet – so a little more than ¼ tsp.
I also suggest using gas drops in.every.bottle – especially in the beginning. We have tried multiple types. Little Tummys is the best for us. (Make sure it is gas drops – not gripe water.)
A NOTE on buffers:
The above ratios are using the CC powder, but you can adapt the ratios using a different buffer if you chose.
· ¼ tsp. of CC powder = ~750mg of calcium carbonate
· 1 extra strength TUMS or 1 TUMS QuikPac = 1000mg of calcium carbonate
· 1 TUMS Kids Smoothies (contains wheat & dairy) = 750mg of calcium carbonate but often have a better flavor for LOs.
· Refer to MARCI-Kids if you are using MCS
***I hope this helps answer questions and makes posting easier. I’m happy to change this post if there are errors.

InactiveThanks Laura – I have 12 days of caracream left (found one packet last week). I did go to buffalo and purchase zegerid otc and mylanta cherry, plus calcium carbonate powder. Keeping my fingers crossed Ehlana will do as well on the zegerid mixture as caracream.
Have not yet heard back from Dr. P. Don’t know if anyone else has.
