Mixing Prevacid in Caracream….?

I have just received some Caracream samples from marci-kids, and I have gotten the prescription for Prevacid capsules from our ped, so I am all ready to go ahead and try the Prevacid in Caracream. But I have a bit of a problem. The instructions that Dr. Phillips sent don’t seem correct to me, and I haven’t been able to get ahold of him – I left a phone message 2 days ago, e-mailed yesterday and today, so I thought I would ask those of you who are mixing the Prevacid in Caracream already for your help. I guess the reason I question the instructions I was given is because I am a pharmacist and I was double checking Dr. Phillips’s math….a pharmacist’s habit, I’m afraid.

Ok, my instructions are to dissolve 8 of the Prevacid 15 mg capsules into the Therasol (which I notice is 60 mL), then refrigerate, shake, add Caracream, etc. Dr. Phillips says this should make a 3 mg/mL suspension. Now here’s my problem: 8 x 15mg is 120mg, and if the Therasol/Caracream is 60 mL, this would be 120 mg/60 mL or 2 mg/mL according to my calculations, not 3 mg/mL. See my dilemma?

For those of you who are mixing the prevacid in caracream, could you tell me how many capsules of Prevacid (either 15 mg or 30 mg) you are using to make a 3 mg/mL suspension?

As well, I was wondering how many mLs a single dose should be in order to ensure that the dose contains the correct amount of buffer. Paige should be getting 10 mg three times a day, so if the suspension is 3 mg/mL that would be 3.3mL per dose, but if the suspension is only 2 mg/mL that would be 5 mL per dose.

he must have meant 30 mg capsules. that is how we make our suspension with the 30 mg capsules….

you have to give a min. of 3.5 ml at a time.

i have no idea how to mix the 15 mg capsules

oh yeah that makes a 3mg/ml suspenion for us. we had to do the dose twice a day instead of 3 times to ensure we were giving at least 3.5 ml at a time.

hi. lauras husband here(cant bring myself to say DH) i used to mix the stuff. been solong, i only remember 7 or 13 pills per bottle.

however, i was able to find….

weird. those mixing charts are different than what dr phillips instructions to us were. we have always been mixing 8, 30 mg capsules with the caracream jr kits.

ps- if the pricing is the same as it used to be, get the big bottles of caracream. they were always the much better bargain. looks like you are using the small bottles.

I do not care what anybody says- they always claimed it had a short shelf and you would be left with unused medicine- and prevacid was always so expensive for us. it never went bad on us. always helped Jonah.

We also use CaraCream around here! BTW, I love the pic Laura posted of you playing ball with Ari in a sling!

SHERI- We had the same problem initially when we started. They assume that you’re using the 30mg capsules unless otherwise told. Like you, I noticed that it was off, and called to double check. So, assuming that you have the CaraCream JR kits, add 16 of the 15mg capsules to make a 3mg/ml solution OR add 8 of the 30mg capsules. I have to admit that sometimes I add more capsules- maybe 18 or 19, and play around with the concentration a bit.

If they sent you the bigger bottles, they’ve changed the formulation over the past several years, so the bigger bottles contain half the amount of buffer compared to the smaller ones (ie the JR ones are smaller) and so you need to give a larger amount per dose. Good luck. I’m impressed that you got them to send you some to begin with as they haven’t been answering my calls lately. Were you stiffed 50 bucks at the border?
