Inactivesomeone out there please help us!!!!! my 3 week old has been having problems since the day she was born. she is bottle fed and after she feeds she arches her back and neck turns bright red to purple almost and formula comes out of her nose and she chokes on it. she has been able to get through these episodes by herself so far but i am afraid that one of these nights she will choke herself. she does not vomit alot, only a little of the formula comes out of her nose and mouth. she got hospitalized twice already. she has had a upper GI that showed that she had reflux, a flat plate of the abdomen which showed no abnormalities. she was born 8lbs 3oz and is almost 4 weeks old and only weighs 8lbs 7oz. she got put on zantac 0.6ml 2xday and reglan 0.8ml 4xday. the doctors say that there is nothing they can do about her condition because they have not seen her have what we call “episodes”. i am going crazy because she seems so fragile and in so much pain all the time. please help i dont know what to do anymore.

Inactivemake an appt. with a ped gi as soon as you can—-they can treat reflux in infants so much better than a regular ped.

InactiveI agree with Christine.
We didnt get any real help until we saw the pedi GI. Regular pedi’s tend to see reflux in infants as a common problem instead of something that is a real issue that needs to be treated aggressively. All I kept hearing from our pedi was that its a “common problem in newborns” and that he didnt need meds…meanwhile I was crying every day watching Aidan suffer…..
Good luck and keep us posted

InactiveDefinitely try to get into a Ped. GI, but it could take awhile (unfortunately). Meanwhile, can you see if your doctor will put her on a PPI medicine like Prevacid?? My son was also on Zantac and Reglan at first. It worked for awhile, but after he was put on Prevacid it made a huge difference.
Also, do you have a video camera or could you borrow one? Maybe you could video tape your daughter having her episodes so you can show your doctor what happens.
Meanwhile, try to keep her elevated when she sleeps (if you’re not already) Prop up the head of her mattress. That helped my son a lot, and it reduces her risk of choking too.
Good luck! I know how scary and frustrating this can be. It will really help if you can get her on the right meds though. Keep us posted!

InactiveHave your pedi. call the GI to get you in sooner. It was going to take us 2months to get in and Abby’s pedi called and we got in the next day!!! I would also video tape her episodes. I video taped Abby when she screamed during feedings b/c the nurse at the GI’s office said “while maybe that’s just how she is”. I wanted to reach through the phone and strangle her.
I would also rec. a PPI until you can get into the GI. Abby is on Prevacid and it has helped her a lot. Good luck.September 11, 2006 at 9:46 am #13330Anonymous
InactiveI agree with everyone else; a ped gi is a good idea.
You can read about PPI meds for reflux at http://www.marci-kids.com Maybe try printing and faxing this information to your pediatrician and asking for script for a PPi while you wait to see the GI. I was able to convince my family doctor to write the script for Myles but I would have taken him to a ped gi if she hadn’t.
Good luck. I know how hard it is. I’ve had two reflux babies and it was so hard both times.
My first was never properly medicated so she lived with the pain for 8 months, but my son was put on Prevacid and once he was on the right dose things turned around quickly.September 11, 2006 at 10:18 am #13336 -
