Motility Issues..can we talk about this?

Okay i have a stinking suspicion that my gerdling has this as a problem but i know little to nothing about it. I am hoping a more enlightened parent can help me out.

Are motility issies due to a physical problem or is it that for some reason the brain isn’t sending the signals to the tummy to get that food moving faster?

Is it typical for a child with GERD to be vomiting chunks of food say 2+ hrs after eating..even if it isn’t often, but say once a week or so? Or does this just go along with reflux and that dang LES just still hasn’t matured?

I have tried googling answers to motility issues but i have yet to find good links to get anything more than a basic answer. Right now we are bogged down w/dh’s seizures, apnea, head trauma deficits plus dd’s adenoid surgery coming up that i can’t squeeze in another appt to the ped GI but i do intend to do so come march.

In the mean time i thought i would ask here. I hope it catches somebody’s eyes.

My GI doc said they often go hand in hand… not just an immature LES, but a whole immature GI system- “sluggish” I think she said, meaning slow stomach to empty and slow for bowel to contract. But who really knows, sometimes you don’t know if what these docs say are true. Hailey also can vomit sometimes 3-4 hours after a feed and surprisingly large amounts of vomit come out so I’ve often wondered the same thing. I am so sorry to hear that you going through such a rough time right now, and wish all the best for your daughter, huband and family.

I think it can be from something like an immature LES- there’s also a sphinctor at the bottom of the stomach, leading to the small intestines (don’t know the name of it) and this can be immature, too, and this can cause some other named reflux- our ped GI showed me this on a diagram once, but I don’t remember the terminology…

Hey – when I get back to work I’ll post my links on motility issues. . .my

daughter did reflux a couple hours after eating in the beginning pre-the

right meds. So I would say it can be related to “normal” reflux issues

when that happens. .. .

When Kaelyn was still spitting up on a regular basis she routinely spit up food hours after she’d eaten it. As she got older she seemed to grow out of it.

oh liz i can’t wait to read those links!

andy was off reflux and motility meds at 14 months and we had a wonderful 6 months w/regards to the reflux. we still did gluten free,casein free, egg free and milk free throughout all that time. lo and behold at 20 months he starts night time reflux again. the pain symptoms at night only. he refluxes during the day but there is no pain that is noticeable.

he is back on meds and we still do a milk free, egg free diet since he is tolerating gluten and casein.

i was wondering if we should consider motility meds but it sounds like it really just is par for the course until he outgrows the reflux. now that he is older i am not so hot to do tests because he is more easily traumatized than he was at 4-8 months old. he is a willfull little guy.

I don’t have time to answer much in detail now but google “delayed gastric emptying” as this is what the condition is called.
