motrin/advil

[Anonymous]

so, I decided to stop using motrin (even though I love the stuff b/c it actually works!!) There’s a new warning on the box something about babies developing hives, rashes, asthmatic breathing (and other stuff I can’t remember)…so it’s back to crappy tylenol..ugh why can’t they invent something that is as safe as tylenol but as strong and long lasting as motrin???

personally, if he was fine with it before, i would think he would be fine taking motrin. i plan on replacing tylenol with motrin as soon as Trace is 6 months. very soon…

He was fine with it, but I like to err on the side of caution..and I always was a little wary of using it b/c of the stomach issues it can cause..I’ll probably keep it on hand for serious pain (when he’s REALLY teething).

Jill,

I worry about Motrin, too. I heard that in Europe there’s a “black box” warning on it and it’s strongly discouraged in use for infants. I do give it to Myles when his teething is really bad, but I am not comfortable with it at all.

Where did you hear about these reactions for Motrin?

I love the new picture of Aidan.

I usually just give Tylenol and save Motrin for something really bad (like a bad teething episode or something). Thanks for the info! It’s good to at know these things. I’m glad they’re at least starting to put the warnings on the box now.

Sorry but whats Motrin- is it ibuprofen or asprin based?

ibuprofen

Oh, I think they tell us not to use it until about 1 year over here unless advised by a Dr- I remember there being some research that found it was associated with stomach problems in adults, I can’t use it at all, makes me ill.

Christine,-there’s a new warning on the motrin and advil boxes, I saw it when I went to kroger to buy some more!! Freaked me out b/c they put it on between the time I bought the last bottle and the time I went to buy it again, I think it was about a 2 month time span!!!

I think this sometimes happens because new research comes out- like the whole anti-depressant thing in kids. They prescribed them willy nilly and then research showed it increased suicide rates and violence! So now they come with big warning labels! I work in the health field and its interesting because they hardly ever use ibuprofen in hospitals- they start with paracetamol and if people need more usually go to a prescription drug.

I agree with that therese!!! It has always had the stomach issue warning on it (ulcers and the like) but this one is new and MAN is it extensive, like I said it lists like 7 different side effects!!! They always use tylenol in hospitals here for babies (as far as I have seen) as well.

While I totally agree with all of you that I’d avoid motrin unless it’s really necessary, I would also make sure that I still keep some in the house. Kaelyn had an awful virus last spring with really high fevers. I was giving her tylenol and it was doing nothing to bring the fever down. Her ped said that once a fever gets over a certain temp (I think it was 102), tylenol is basically useless and they need motrin. We ended up needing to alternate between the two meds every 3 hours just to keep the fever at a reasonable level.

The whole fever-paracetamol thing is interesting. Alana had a urinary tract infection (UTI) with high fevers for a week. The GP told us to use paracetamol for fever (of course the stupid woman also said she had a virus!!). I have never had a UTI but my friends assure me it is like weeing razor blades. Poor little thing.

Once admitted to hospital a lovely fellow with a very impressive title- Fellow of Peadiatric Emergency Medicine- or something, worked out she had a UTI. He also said that they don’t give paracetamol to reduce fevers- that fevers need to ride themselves out because they are a healing mechanism- and that they give the paracetamol for the pain. Now I don’t necessarily know if this is right, but it is certainly interesting! Definately not trying to start a debate or anything on it- just thought it was interesting (I know I will continue to use panadol if Alana has a fever- she must at least be in pain!).

I’ve done the tylenol/motrin alternating thing with Austin a few times when his fever was really high, and yep fevers really ARE our bodies way of trying to work things out of our systems, and a lot of the time I let them run their course but if it’s over 102, then Austin gets the motrin/tylenol.

My children’s doctor says the same thing….fever is actually good because it’s the body’s way of fighting the infection. Our clinic says to use tylenol mainly to keep the child comfortable but not to worry about controlling the fever…unless it’s dangerously high which to me is anything above 104. I agree with their philosophy but I hate to see my children uncomfortable so I give them tylenol when they have a fever.
