Moving with compounded prevacid

We are about to move from Virginia to Ohio and will have about two days in the car. DS’s prevacid is compounded and works well for him and he takes it hapily so we didn’t want to change it to the solutabs (he didn’t like those and spit out a lot of the medicine). So I’m wondering if anyone has any experience traveling in the car (for an extended period) with thier meds and how you kept it cold so it didn’t degrade. I’m sure someone else has been here and I searched for it but didn’t come up with anything so forgive me if its been asked before.

I am thinking about buying a electric cooler for the car but its $115 for it and that is A LOT of $ just for one or two or three moves (we are in the Air Force) and hopefully by the next time we move we will not need it anymore.

I would think a ‘regular’ cooler is fine, just make sure you put new ice in it…

Yes, I agree with Laura. I think any cooler would work fine, as long as you keep adding fresh ice. I traveled overnight when Sarah was a newborn and I kept her expressed breast milk cold in a cooler for 2 days. Good luck!

We use the compounded Prevacid as well, and we kept Bryce’s Prevacid in a regular cooler with ice while we went camping last summer – it worked fine. On shorter trips we’ve brought the medicine in one of those little coolers that you keep a baby bottle in with an ice pack. That probably wouldn’t last two days though unless you had some way to refreeze the ice pack. Good luck with your move!

We go on 4 hour trips usually twice a month and we travel with addy’s pre-made Zegerid. I use a large plastic cup and fill it with ice and stick the meds down in it so that its completely covered with ice. I am sure a cooler would work just as well but this way, I keep it in the cup holder so I have it on hand easily if its med time.

We’ve used a regular cooler, and just refreshed the ice when it all melted.

Yep, we used a regular cooler with my daughter’s compounded Prevacid too. Worked just fine.

My pharmacist actually says that it doesn’t have to be kept cold. He says the new studies say it is ok at room temp. He doesn’t even refrigerate it at the pharmacy- it’s just in w/ the other meds. Personally, I’d keep it in the cooler, but maybe that will take a little of the pressure off!
