MSIP babies/solutabs

Landen has been on solutabs since Monday and now his poop is green and runny ( no blood as of yet) but this is a bad sign for us since this is what started when we discovered his milk protein allergy and put him on alimentum. I noticed this yesterday and he had it again today. I called the emergency line to the GI doc to see if we could get somethng different for him (Prilosec or something) since he’s been SUUUPER fussy now I guess with cramping and do you know what they said? “Maybe the dose is too high!” (He’s on 15mg) I laughed and said, no actually it’s too low”, then they said, “well then it’s probably his formula” OMG are they serious? He’s been on alimentum since he was like 2.5 weeks old. I am sure that is what it is. The OLD thing, not the NEW thing. I am sooo irritated.

So my question is, for MSPI babies that stopped solutabs, what are they on now? I need to ask for something new and if I don’t get it from the GI I’ll ask the pedi and if not him I’ll get a new doctor. I am so over this, my baby has been suffering for 9 weeks now.

well a thought or 2: maybe it is the formula? it can take a while for the proteins to build up & alimentum does still have milk proteins…how long has he been on the alimentum? just a thought I’d throw out there…

as for the solutabs, they have lactose & it’s pretty rare for a baby to be lactose intolerant. that being said, there are babies who have problems from the solutabs, whether it is the lactose or the aspertame, who knows?

I would give the solutabs a two week trial…then you can try zegerid or caracream. there’s a Prevacid 101 link from Groupie Intro that tells what I’m talking about…

if after trying zegerid or caracream for 2 weeks your baby is still having issues, then it might be time to try neocate? I’m not sure…

You maybe can try the capsules. You open them and pour the meds out onto some applesauce.

Myles had green runny poops on Prevacid but it never bothered me. He was breastfed so I thought it was normal. Eventually his stools changed to a more normal consistency and then he actually got consitpated even though we kept him on Prevacid. As for the cramping many babies do have some cramping when they first start the solutabs but it often passes as the body adjusts to the medication. Myles had very obvious cramping for the first 10 -14 days but then it passed and he did fine on it.

I personally would not try Prilosec. There are so many people who have trouble with it because they can’t get it compounded properly and if it’s not compounded properly it loses it’s effetiveness right in the bottle so the baby is getting no meds.

generally MSPI babies do not have problems with lactose. it is the milk protein they cannot tolerate. that is different than milk sugar.

you may want to look into neocate, my son did ok on alimentum until the milk proteins built up in his system and he was miserable even on a high dose of PPI.

I had no idea that the alimentum could crap out on us (no pun intended ) What is Neocate? it is an RX formula or is it on the shelf? I guess I’ll run with the prevacid for another week and see how it goes. He’s still reaally bad at night with the reflux.

One more thing. I’ve been dosing it in halves. One half at 7am and another around 4pm. Do you think he’d do better at night if I gave the 2nd half a little bit later or perhaps the entire 15mg dose at night time only? I’m getting no luck getting the marci-kids dose for him.

its better to do it in 2, if not 3 doses. infants metabolize PPI’s very rapidly. i wouldnt not do one dose, personally.

neocate is rx if your insurance is going to pay for it. if you want to pay for it, then you order it through your pharmacy or neocate.com.

before switching formulas though I would address the PPI

you can try giving like you do and then add a dose of zantac at night- just make sure it’s given 2-5 hrs seperate from the PPI (our ped Gi said 2 hrs & it worked for us, others’ drs here have said to give more hours b.t the meds)

you can also just give a 3rd dose of 7.5 before bed- when you run out play dumb & say you lost a lot trying to adminieter/break the solutab, etc…

Thanks ladies, I don’t know what I would have done without this site, seriously..you guys are awesome. Reflux and MSPI is far more complicated that I could have ever imagined. I’d take my Kaden’s colic back any day!
