Okay so I am freaking out. I have been suspecting and it was confirmed today. Cooper has mucous in his stools. What does this mean? He is on Nutramigen and 30mg of Prevacid/day and nothing has really changed other than we just increased his prevacid dose on Monday from 15mg/day. I just need some advice. We go back to the ped on Monday for our 4 month check up. Just need some reassurance until then. TIA.

When you say confirmed today, what do you mean? Did you take in a diaper or just really see a bunch of it this time? Has he had the mucous for quite some time now or is it a new thing?

Usually mucous would represent some type of intolerance or some issue with digestion. So maybe he is reacting to the small amount of milk in the Nutramigen? Did the mucous start when you increased the meds? I wonder if maybe he is reacting to the increase of lactose or aspertame (assuming you are doing the solutabs??)

It’s hard to say really.. does he seem to be bothered more?? Cramping or more gas??

My little guy had mucous all the time at that age, and I never could figure out what the cause was. It just finally went away, so maybe it was just his digestive system maturing.

I’m sure you’re fine to wait until Monday to do anything about it… unless you start to see blood, then I might take him in sooner.

I guess he just had more in his diaper today. I have been looking at them for awhile now. He has been on Nutramigen now since the end of April, so I don’t think it is the formula, but it could be the stuff in the prevacid…. He isn’t acting any differently, sleeping not as good at night, but we weren’t doing that great to begin with.

eeek, that is a toughie. This happened to us too. Landen had started solutabs and Alimentum within a few weeks of each other. I never knew what caused his probs, but he had blood AND mucous and tested pos for blood in his stool (even that I could not see) so we went on Neocate. The ped said he had MSPI- BAD.

I would def mention this to the ped on Monday and see if they can look at his stool. Maybe take a dirty diaper in if you can get a “fresh” (ICK) one for them close to the appt. time. For Landen, they were almost 100% sure it was the offending proteins in the Alimentum (it takes time for them to really build up in their system and attack).

I hope Cooper is ok. I’ll be thinking of you guys. Keep us posted.

Ah, the dreaded mucous. I think it’s different for all kiddos because my situation with Kate is like Naomi’s. I just think it’s her immature digestive system because I can’t for the LIFE of me figure out what it is that I’m eating. I hope it’s nothing with Cooper but with you saying his behavior and sleep has changed I would be suspicious but that’s just me. That prevacid can be such a stumper!!!! I’m hopeful that Kate can be put on something else because the granules quite frankly are driving me CRAZY!!!! The timing too, ugh. I hope everything’s okay though. He’s lucky to have you!!!!

Is some mucous normal? We had the same problem last night – we noticed some mucous, but we’ve been giving more and more formula (Alimentum) as my wife is having difficulty nursing.

Like Naomi and Claire, we have dealt with mucousy bms too, and nothing I did ever made it go away (even TED for 3 weeks – stricly breastfed). Caden finally outgrew it. So, with that said, I do think some babies have immatured digestive systems and mucous may just be part of it for awhile. Unless he seems uncomfortable or has other symptoms, it may just be something to put up with until he outgrows it.

You can always mention it to your ped if you’re concerned though.

P.s. We had HUGE blowout bms with mucous and FOAM when Caden was on Prevacid…tmi I know, but I wanted to share that with you. As soon as we took him off, his bms went back to mucousy/normal but without the foam and no blow outs. I would be tempted to try Zegerid if I had to do it over again.

True, Laura, and I do/did have OALD, but I find it suspicious that the foam did not start until Prevacid and stopped once he was off.

I had OALD all along – before giving Caden Prevacid, but he never had foam until he started the meds…hmmm strange, isn’t it?

I don’t understand why he had so much trouble with the Prevacid, but he surely did. I guess all babies are different just as we are in the way they react to meds…

mucous for us meant that after a month of being on alimentum, the milk proteins had built up in his system, and he required neocate. but along with the mucous, he also became fussy and his reflux flaired up like crazy,

Had our 4month ped visit yesterday. He does indeed have mucous in his stool, however it isn’t every diaper, probably only once/day. My ped wanted me to contact the ped GI and let him know which I did. He doesn’t want us to chnage formula now for at least 3 more months, which I wasn’t planning on doing anyway, and he told me “NO dairy/milk, soy or rice cereal for 3months”, which again I wasn’t planning on doing anyway. So we will stick with Nutramigen and work on starting small amounts of veggies/fruits at 6 months for the oral training and probably try changing the formula at 8-9 months, I figure if it isn’t broke we don’t need to fix it!

Well, at least you know now. I’m glad you don’t have to change anything and hopefully he will outgrow it soon.
