InactiveWhy would dd’s spit up become mucousy? Teething? Could it be a milk allergy? Shes having so many issues now.
ThxOctober 2, 2007 at 3:15 am #43611Anonymous
InactiveHow old is she? Sophia has curdled spit up a lot. Our pediatrician told us it’s partially digested breast milk. Are you nursing or formula feeding?

Inactivemy dd pukes become mucosy when she has a cold, but the mucus doesn’t come out of her nose, just in her puke. With any refluxer, milk should be avoided for a while, since their guts is sensitive due to the reflux.
I hope your little one is better today.LeoOctober 2, 2007 at 7:07 pm #43659Anonymous
InactiveHi-she’s bf. It’s not like yellowy mucousy, clear & thick w/ curdles in it. Just kind of drools out of her mouth. Real thick like. Yuk.
I think it’s why she’s having a hard time burping. Her tummy junk is too thick.Ugh, help…October 2, 2007 at 7:40 pm #43660hellbennt

I did the elimination diet (more below)- this is to find out if there are any proteins being passed through your milk that are affecting your baby. The most common are milk and soy proteins. If your baby has an intolerance to these proteins it is referred to as ‘mspi’ (milk soy protein intolerance).*Here’s about mspi and related issues: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;PN=1&TPN=1
*Elimination diet (for breastfeeding): http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T041800.asp – this is when you eliminate foods from your diet to distinguish what foods may be upsetting your baby. It is very difficult, but it made me feel better because I knew I had tried ‘everything.’ The most common ‘triggers’ are dairy (all dairy including ‘hidden’ dairy) & soy. Jonah was born w/ an immature valve (LES = Lower esophageal Sphinctor (sp?) & while I did find items in my diet that affected him (tomato products, eggplant & tuna- weird I know), my diet really wasn’t an issue, on the whole. This diet can help you determine if your baby has MSPI (milk soy protein intolerance).
Here is a discusion about the elimination diet- scroll through to read all about how others have done this: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2852&a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;a mp;PN=1

a great breastfeeding resource site:http://www.kellymom.com/ there’s a ‘milk calculator’ where you can figure out how many ounces of expresed milk your baby should be getting http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html#calculator
here’s about thickening feeds (I personally don’t believe in it for breastfed babies, but please do your own research

InactiveShanes was like that too .. i think it could be mucousy from a cold.. i dont think from teething… though there poop could be mucousy from teething..so who knows? But just letting you know we have been there.. and there were actual times where he would vomit mucous all over me! And he was on alimentum.. which is very broken down milk protiens.. i didnt think then that it could of been the milk.
How long has this been happening?? Is it in her poo?October 2, 2007 at 10:35 pm #43671Anonymous
InactiveHi Hellbent,
Thanks for all the links. My GI said to me today “you must stop breastfeeding” really PO’d me b/c I tried really hard to get her off formula. He wants to measure how much she’s ingesting & I don’t know if I can pump enough to *feed* her. I can never pump more than 2-3 oz, but DD can drink alot more somehow.I’m so confused. I’ll try eliminating dairy & see what happens. It’s hard though b/c I’m already a whopping 105 lbs & 5’8″. I don’t want to lose anymore weight. All this worrying about DD is shrinking me.October 3, 2007 at 6:45 pm #43715hellbennt
Keymasteryour doctor should NOt tell you to stop breastfeeding!!!
if you can get to a IBCLC (Int’l board certified lactation consultant) they have scales where they weigh the baby before you feed then after to see how much baby is taking inI so DO NOT like your dr!!!!October 3, 2007 at 6:47 pm #43716hellbennt

InactiveI agree with Laura – I had a friend who had a scale to weigh her baby before and after BF in order to determine how much he was taking in. I think that’s a good thing to look into.
Mucus in the spit up could be from a cold, if she seems to have cold symptoms (it runs down their throat from their sinuses and into their stomach). However, my son Ben had mucus in his spit up at all times, cold or not, before I finally got him off of milk/soy proteins. My ped explained that the stomach and gut produces mucus to protect itself from things that may be irritating it, such as milk proteins. If this is the case, you often can see the mucus in the bowel movements, but I know with Ben it was in his spit-up and vomit. If you want to continue to BF, it may be worthwhile to look into an elimination diet of some sort, to completely eliminate milk and soy protein (and possibly other proteins as well) from your diet.Good luck!MFPIx22007-10-05 13:44:39
