My Paed says silent reflux does not exist

He said if she is not spitting up then she does not have reflux and that her refusal to feed most likely has to do with me. But my 5-month old has all the symptoms of what I understand to be called silent reflux. What have other people heard?

Silent reflux does exist and is worse than just plain spitting up. Because not only does the acid burn coming up, it also burns going back down!

In my opinion, I would find another doctor! This one sounds like a know-it-all and a jerk! Good luck and hope you find a really great doc!

Your ped. is WRONG!!! If I were you I’d look for a new pedi. how dare he tell you that the problems are b/c of you. I was told the SAME thing with Landen, until Landen stopped breathing (apnea) from his silent reflux. Then they finally beleived me. Landen was on an apnea monitor. Silent reflux does SO exist. you can hear the volume come up. It sounds like a ‘gulp’ or ‘glerp’ sound when they swallow it back down. landen would scream at the top of his lungs every time he silently refluxed before he was medicated with a PPI and switched to Neocate formula.

I am sorry you have an ignorant pedi!! I’d def try to find one that will listen to you. I can totally sympathize. I even had a GI doc tell me Landen just had colic and I had ‘maternal anxiety’. What a joke.

Ask for a referral to a ped GI and/or get a new ped. Your ped is wrong. My dd had bad silent reflux, which led to a bad feeding aversion. A pediatric psychiatrist said it was my fault. It’s not your fault.

EW! It so does exist. My daughter had it, and she eventually stopped gaining weight until we finally figured out what was going on and got her medicated.

I have to agree with the others that you need to find another doctor. It doesn’t sound like yours knows much about reflux at all.

I agree with the other moms. While my lo didn’t have silent reflux it totally does exist and does tend to be worse than regular reflux and has more chance of causing apnea episode and aspiration as well. i would find a new doc asap.

Guys, thanks so much for your support. I left my appointment yesterday feeling like a complete failure and in tears. This guy was head of gastro paediatrics for Sydney’s Children Hospital and is now head of the gastro paed dept in Dublin so I was dumbstruck when he said he has seen no evidence that silent reflux actually exists. He said they have done studies and more often than not it is a matter of incompetent Mums and whiney babies. He would not even agree to run any basic reflux tests on her. He said your child is fine. She will eat when she’s hungry. I am out of time and dismissed me. So depressing as it took me nearly a month to get in to see the guy and cost me a 250 euro consultant fee to boot. Back to square one!

I will find a new doc asap!!!!

my baby had severe silent reflux and also had apnea episodes & was in the NICU for them and sent home on an apnea monitor!

OMG, what a jerk that guy is!!!!! not OK at all! You are so not a failure!! you are a great mom to be researching on your own and not believing and egotistical incompetent poor excuse for a medical professional.

Get yourself a new doctor and pat yourself on the back for keeping your cool with such a jerk!

Ditto to what everyone else has said. I can’t imagine your disappointment after waiting to see this specialist and being hopeful that he could help your baby.

My first son had silent reflux, but my second son was a puker. It took me so long to figure out what was really the issue with my first son because whenever I would bring up the idea of reflux, the doctor would say, “well, how much is he spitting up?” He practically NEVER spit up, so the doctor convinced me for a long time that it couldn’t be reflux. I finally figured it out when he was about 10 months old and nearly outgrowing it. So good for you that YOU know what you’re dealing with!!

Good luck finding a better doctor ASAP!!

OMG– I am so sorry. What a jerk. My DD has silent reflux, and thankfully my ped figured it out. I thought it was sleep apnea.

His personal attack on you was unfounded. I really, really hope the next doc you see is more understanding.
