InactiveHi!!
My 5 week old daughter just got diagnosed with reflux yesterday. She was prescribed Prevacid Solutabs. I’ve read that you can give your child Mylanta before feedings to help. I went to my pharmacy today and the only thing that they had was Milk of Magnesia. When I asked if it was the same, they said yes…but so far I haven’t heard anyone talk about Milk of Magnesia. Does anyone know if it really is the same thing or if I need to go somewhere else and get the Mylanta? Thanks for your help!!May 6, 2008 at 7:59 pm #51164Anonymous
InactiveIt’s the same thing as far as what it does for the acid.. soothing and coating the throat, etc. However, Mylanta Cherry Supreme uses calcium as the antacid while the others, like M.O.M, use aluminum. Now the levels are very low, and it would take quite a bit to cause any harm to a baby, but most of us try to steer clear of the aluminum just to be on the safe side.

InactiveDitto to what Naomi said. And they use the MOM allot when people are constipated b/c it helps you use the bathroom. The mylanta does the same thing but not as effectively so it is better for more frequent use.

InactiveOkay, so can you tell me if I can give her the mylanta the same time I give the prevacid…or do I have to wait or spread it out? And, I read somewhere that I need to wait 30 minutes after I give the prevacid to feed her. Can you tell me why or if this is correct? My doctor or pharmacist didn’t tell me to wait.

InactiveOkay so I think that I’m confused…remember I’m new to all of this stuff!! I just got on MARCI-Kids and if I read correctly, doesn’t it say to not take antacids with prevacid? Please help!!

InactiveYes, you shouldn’t take them together.. meaning not at the same time. try to space them at least 4 hours from each other.. but you can use them within the same day.. make sense??
As far as the timing the prevacid.. what form are you using? If it’s the solutabs, then yes, you need to wait at least 30 minutes before feeding, so that the med is absorbed into the body. If you feed too early, the food will block the meds. absorption (that’s a very rough explanation).May 7, 2008 at 7:00 pm #51197 -
