InactiveJust wanted to get this out there. Justice has been on zegerid for, well a long time. We have been mixing mylanta with it like suggested. I just took him off his meds two days ago and now all of a sudden he is constipated. I am assuming it has to do with his body not knowing how to go on its own. I don’t know how common this is, but just thought I would get it out there. I could be wrong about it being the mylanta. Of course, before I took him off the mylanta he always had watery explosive poops and now there hard and hard for him to get out.

Inactivemylanta acts as a stool softener. unlike suppositories, you cant become dependent on it to go.
his body may just need to adjust? also my gi said that reflux babies are known to have constipation issues.
i dont know how this would work since youre breastfeeding but when my son used to have these issues i gave him a teaspoon of dark karo syrup in a 4 oz bottle to help him go.nataliachick72006-11-10 16:19:50

InactiveHonestly when Aidan was constipated I used the q-tip. Worked every time. Karo syrup REALLY hurt his tummy and prune juice did the same.

InactiveMyles was frequently (and sometimes still is) constipated. Similar to what Jill said when it gets bad I use a thermometer and it works 90% of the time.
If his body doesn’t adjust after a while of being off of Mylanta you may have to try some of the other remedies some of use. Flax seed oil works well for Myles (1 tbs a day by spoon), as does Prunes (I only give him 1 tbs twice a day…it doesn’t seem to bother his tummy at all). Diluted Pear Juice helps. I give him an ounce or two per day. (Since Justice is nursing I guess the juice may not work unless he’ll take it from a bottle or spoon).
Good luck. I hope things resolve on their own!

InactiveHi, my 3 year old still suffers from constipation in conjunction with reflux and we give her Mylanta to keep her stools soft – nothing else works for her. Prunes, pear juice, flax oil, etc. are all too hard on her tummy. You may want to try putting him back on a little Mylanta daily just to keep his stools soft.

InactiveMy three year old also still suffers from constipation. I’ve always believed it to be a result of her previous reflux and the meds she was on, but the doc. said he didn’t think it likely. I knew I was right about it. Anyway, she is on a prescribed stool softener, Miralax. It works really well, and supposedly it is very safe, runs right through them.
