InactiveAmy, I only have a few minutes, so I just skimmed all of the entries, so please forgive me if I misread something. Kaelyn was allergic to something that I was eating (I’m guessing now that it was wheat), so I stopped bf at 5 weeks. However, while I was bf and afterwards when we used formula, Kaelyn was only happy when she was eating. If we would have let her, she would happily have kept a bottle in her mouth all day. She was also a spitter, so a good percentage of what she took in came right back up, which was an entirely different issue. The ped GI realized that she was comfort feeding and told us to limit her to 2 oz every 2 hours. Kaelyn never really got past the comfort feeding stage until she was on a good dose of prevacid. So, it is definitely possible that Lucy’s issues could all be related to reflux. I was convinced that I wasn’t producing enough milk for Kaelyn, but when we saw what she was taking in from the bottle, we realized that it wasn’t a hunger issue.

InactiveLaura, we must’ve posted at the same time
Didn’t see it till now.I’m in Ohio outside of Toledo. I’ll probably wait till Wed to see the ped doc and start there. Maybe she’ll just start Lucy on something with Henry’s history. I have a sling and don’t have a clue how to wear it. It’s so uncomfortable.
Kim, I don’t know if I even mentioned it yet or not, but I’m on Henry’s diet-dairy,soy,gluten, corn and fructose free. Our new allergist just told me though that Henry would have reflux regardless of the eating issues. It’s a seperate thing for him. I always thought the food intolerances were causing the reflux. I’m sure me eliminating helps though as it does help a lot with Henry.
We are trying to gage how much she’s eating with the bottle. Today’s a good example. I’ve mostly btl fed for convienence. She’s much more content when she gets a bottle. It’s weird. So, in turn, she doesn’t eat as much. Doesn’t make sense to me at all.
I’m just trying to hang in there, cuz I know this will get better eventually. And again, it’s only with your support I’m sticking it out.

InactiveAmy, you don’t want to know what we did. It wasn’t fun…
Basically, my breasts were so painful from her constant sucking, that I would let her feed on demand, but not for hours at a time. Any time she seemed to want to feed, I would put her on, and let her do up to 30 minutes on each side. Or, if she was doing non-nutritive sucking, I’d let her soothe herself for a while, but wouldn’t let it go on for hours. I just couldn’t take the pain. Unfortunately, that meant that she was crying a lot (which was hard for us all). I don’t believe in restricting feedings when they’re so young, but I’m also only human and my body can only take so much before I was in quite a bit of pain. To calm the crying, I’d wear her in a sling a lot, bounce her around, dance with her, sing songs, let her suck my finger, a paci (which she never took). Sometimes when things were really bad, I’d wear her in a sling and let her nurse until she got groggy, and then I’d pop her off, but keep wearing her around. She was sleepy at that point, so even though she started to fuss, I could usually calm her by walking around with her. We did swaddling, which didn’t really calm her. I did a lot of skin to skin to help calm her. I tried a swing, but she HATED it (I ended up with 3 different ones out of desperation). As for the feeding, for us it unfortunately got progressively worse as her reflux spiraled out of control. She would only suck for about 2 minutes if I was lucky on each side, and then I couldn’t get her to suck any more. She was pulling off, arching, the whole reflux deal. She was basically inconsolable day and night- wanting to be held, but writhing and arching so much that you couldn’t hold her. The feeding basically stopped at 2 months- at that point she was diagnosed with reflux- and that’s when our whole sleep-feeding nightmare began.
I really hope that things turn around for you and Lucy. I know how hard it is, especially when you have another young child at home (Sarah was 20 months when Hailey was born). I agree with the others to see if zantac or some meds help at all. And babywearing really saved me.
Hang in there.

InactiveYou know, I’m thinking the BWing is a great idea.
She’s only content when I’m holding her. She will be asleep in my arms, I lay her down and boom wide awake and screaming again.
This is weather it’s the car seat, the bouncy chair or her bassinet. I basicly sleep with her on me. I never thought I’d ever understand the “family bed”, but I’m sure starting to. Haven’t been able to nurse on my side yet due to the c/s pain still. Can’t wait till that works out. That’ll help a lot. Thanks Laura! I also looked up your BWing link here and found the forum.
Luckily I must have niples of steel, cuz I’ve had no issues with pain really. A little sometimes when she first latches on, but nothing major at all. She really does latch on well. Much better than it ever went with Henry. It makes me feel really great to be still nursing. I just keep thinking it’ll get easier.

Good job on the nursing! I hope it gets easier and easier for you both.September 24, 2006 at 3:36 pm #14176Anonymous
InactiveLucy,
I’m glad that you don’t have pain. I hope that the babywearing helps you a bit- if anything it frees up your arms, and they like it, so it keeps them calmer. As for the BF, it will get easier. Hang in there.

InactiveLucy
I’m so sorry you are going through all of this especially with a 1 year old too. I know it is really hard dealing with a baby which you really don’t know what’s going on and having a toddler too. I’ve in in the same shoes and still am. I unfortunately don’t have any advice but just to tell you, your doing great! I know those words helped me get through some of my bad days. I hope things get easier for you!

InactiveWe were told to try Mylanta even before Seth was diagnosed with the reflux at 3 weeks old for his fussiness and gas- we used 1 cc 10-15 minutes before every feed back then. Worth a shot. Keep us posted on how the appt. goes.

InactiveSorry just saw where you did try the Mylanta. Hope things are better today!!!

InactiveWell, I’ve been trying 1/2 teas. when she’s screaming. It helps for about 2 minutes. Then back to severe pain. It seems to me she needs more than mylanta.
I’ll let you know how the doc went.
I’m going to start a new post on the BFing issues.
