InactiveI first want to say that I am not s big fan of CIO but there are times when I think it is needed. I believe that you can do it in a way that isn’t harmful to the baby- ie reassuring him and what not
that said—–Ryder is still getting up every 1.5- 2 hours he has done this for the past 4 or 5 nights ( I am getting foggy on it!) I am so run down now. Finally this morning I had DH bring him into bed. Where he promtly nursed a second and fell asleep. So I really don’t think he is hungry. The thing that drives me crazy is that we just moved him out of our bed and got him use to sleeping in his own bed. I can’t do a family bed right now….. I am thinking about getting a mini co sleeper.
So I am going to let him CIO when he wakes after only 3 hours of sleep which generally happens around 11:30. The thing is how long should I let him cry? I have other kids that I really don’t want him to wake up but should I go in there or have DH go in? Don’t pick him up?
I have Marc Weissbulth book which I love but I need someone who has gone thru it!

InactiveI am really not a big fan of CIO with refluxers. The crying can aggravate the reflux. Do you think he is waking b/c of the reflux and the nursing soothes him and then he falls back to sleep? Is he on meds? Do you think his reflux is under control and he is waking out of habit? Do you normally feed him to sleep or can he fall asleep on his own (ie do you put him to bed awake)? Sorry for all of the questions. I have used The Babywhisperer books by Tracy Hogg with all of my girls. Abby is now 6 months and I started with her at 3 months after her reflux was under control. In her book “The Babywhisperer Solves All Your Problems” she gives lots of step by step advice on how to solve specific problems. There is a website http://www.babywhisperer.com that has a wonderful message board that has great threads on night wakings, reflux, naps and starting a baby on E.A.S.Y. I highly recommend it. Right now the website is down, nasty hackers again.
Abby has done great on a 4hr.EASY. She eats when she wakes not before sleeping, which is great for refluxers. She also has just started sleeping through the night.
She has a great trick of Wake To Sleep (W2S) that you use if a baby is consistently waking at the same time every night. You go in, I think 1hr or 30min (I have to check for sure) and slightly stir the baby and this resets their sleep cycle and helps break the habit. Also if he is waking up at the same time every night then it is probably a habit if it is a different times then he is probably hungery. But if the reflux is under control with meds. then this could be waking him up. At his age though he probably still needs one night feeding. Tracy also uses a dream feed b/w 10 & 11pm to help sleep through. You just go in put them up and feed w/o really waking them. Sorry for the long discription. If you have any questions, I’d be to answer them.BTW, I used Ferber’s method to get my oldest to sleep through the night at 7 months but she wasn’t a refluxer. It did work but I couldn’t do it with Abby b/c of the reflux.

InactiveHe is on Axid right now- though we are going in for the endo the 25th.
I just don’t know what to do. He does seem to be waking at the same time every night. It’s kiling me.
I let the boys CIO when I put them down at 7 months. He sleeps great during the day.
My DD was a great sleeper. I am just so tired and done!

InactiveI never really did CIO with my babies (I simply can’t stand the crying), though I am not really opposed to it as long as the baby is not in any pain or discomfort.
What I did do when I determined that they no longer needed to eat at night, and I was sure they were not in any pain (two of mine were refluxers) is go in and comfort them without picking them up. I’d wait a few minutes (2-5 minutes) and then go in and put them back in the position they usually fell asleep in, pat them a little, say “night-night” or “mommy’s here” and then leave. I’d go back and forth as many times as it took. Also, I always put them to bed awake but sleepy.
If you rock or feed them to sleep, and lay them down sound asleep, they will want that rocking and feeding each time they wake up again. Babies have more frequent light sleep periods than adults, and if they don’t know how to get to sleep by themselves they will insist on having you help them get back to sleep each time they awaken during light sleep. I read in one of the baby sleep books, that to a baby it’s like you falling asleep in your bed and waking up on the couch with no idea how you got there. That’s why it’s so important to lay them down awake, and let them learn to put themselves to sleep. Maybe you’re already doing that….but I wasn’t sure.
Some other little things that have helped with mine… White noise in their rooms (a fan or white noise machine). A lovey of some type. I used to snuggle them in a favorite blanket when giving them their bedtime bottle (you could do it while nursing). I still do this with Myles. They all became attached to a blanket this way and it helped alot during the night. Myles hugs his blanket when he falls asleep at night and if he has a night waking it will often help him fall back to sleep.
How much is he sleeping during the day? At that age I used to keep Myles up after 4 pm, and that helped. It was a struggle sometimes because he often wanted to nap at 5 or 6 pm, but then he wouldn’t sleep well at night. All babies are different, but I though I’d throw that out there….maybe he’s napping too much?
Good luck. This will pass. My kids are all good sleepers, but they’ve all had periods when it was difficult. Sleep issues are the number one complaint of parents of infants and toddlers, so you are definitely not alone.

InactiveAll my girls sleep with a white noise machine in their rooms and Abby has a fav. blankie. Have you tried a PPI with him? What formula is he on?

InactiveAlso, Abby takes 3 naps per day. Two are b/w 1.5-2hrs each and one catnap from 5-6pm. Sometimes she only sleeps 30/45mins for the cat nap just depends on the day. Then she is up from 6pm to 7:30 when she eats and goes to bed. How often is he eating? At his age he should probably be on a 4 hr. schedule. I changed Abby from a 3-4hr eating schedule at 4 months. Is he on solids yet? I think a PPI might help a lot better then Axid. Why are they doing an Endo? Ignore the formula ? I forgot he is nursed. Have you eliminated any milk and soy in your diet? How is he when he nurses? Sorry for all the ?’s just trying to get the whole picture.

InactiveI did it with Aidan, had too we were getting no sleep and neither was he. He still cries when he goes down, I don’t think he’ll ever really be a fan of going to sleep, and he still wakes up a few times i nthe night, but he cries for about 5 mins or so and goes back to sleep. I did it at 4 months. I opted for it to save the sanity of everyone in our house..if he wakes and cries for more than 10-15 mons, I go in and rock him/give him mylanta or whatever he needs, and he goes back to sleep.

InactiveI would take him to the ped and make sure nothing else is going on that would cause the nightwaking first. Then once nothing comes of that I would do just like Jill said. We did it with Isaac and it was the right thing for us to do b/c otherwise he just wouldn’t sleep at all at night! Good Luck!

InactiveOkay- I need to update! I blew my power cable and had no power for the puter!
So Tuesday night I put him down and he cried a bit and fell asleep. The
he woke 2 hrs later. We decided to let him cry. He cried for a 30mins
and I had it and went and got him. He slept for about 4 hrs after that.I finally called GI and found out that Gerber cereal has milk in it.
BTW I am SF and DF for 4 months now—–I read the ingredientd
and never saw milk. Oh well so last night he was a DREAM! he slept like
he always has 4 hrs and got up at 1:30 and the once at 5:30……. my
baby is back!He even took his normal duration of a nap today. He is happier again. I feel like a idoit about the cereal though 🙁
Sorry about the spelling mistakes NAK

InactiveYes, you have to be very weary of cereal and oatmeal. We use Earth’s Best Organic oatmeal, Beechnut rice cereal is also milk and soy free. So glad to hear that he is doing better.

InactiveSo last night wasn’t too bad. Of course DH was at the Mets game and he stayed in the city.
I put him down at 8:30- (I think!) it may have been earlier. Then he woke at 12. Then he woke again at 2:30. I was oh no not again. So since DH wasn;t here Ryder slept with me! I forget how much noise they make. I think he nursed one more time after that.
I am still unsure why he still waking so much. He did wake again and cried but didn’t nurse.
I guess we will get answers on Wed with the edno. I am really not looking forward to it, but I really think we need some answers.
If your LO is refluxing at night how do they act? I am thinking there may still be dairy in his system from the cereal.

Keymasterrefluxing at night:
howling/shrieking in pain (that’s obvious
– sorry)glerping sounds (internal ‘wet’ hiccups)
fussiness/restlessness
frequent wakings

InactiveI could still be the dairy, it does take some time to get out of their system. If Abby is refluxing at night she wakes up screaming and doesn’t settle easily. I hope the endo goes well. I would highly suggest checking into a PPI. They just work so much more efffectivly then H2 Blockers but really need to be given at least twice per day.
