InactiveOur 21 pound 13-month-old still awakens crying hard off and on all night (sometimes every 30 minutes all night.) She has been on the MARCI dose of Prevacid solutabs, and while she stopped spitting up and vomiting all day a few months ago and seems mostly comfortable all day, she continues to be miserable all night. We’re thinking the Prevacid has caused sleep disturbances or just isn’t effective for her. Our ped and our GI ped are convinced Prevacid is the only med there is, but after lots of reading, we want to try Zegerid. Where do we begin?
Do I need to buy Zegerid OTC? Beg our ped to prescribe it? Either way, am I supposed to order Buffer Babies, and if so, how do I when the MARCI site is now under construction? I’ll keep researching on this site, but I wondered if anyone could direct me, please. Thanks.

InactiveLadies, thank you for your responses. I am assuming her whole issue is still reflux–now silent reflux. We’ve taken her to an ENT to rule out those issues. Is it common for a child with silent reflux to show little to no discomfort during the day but then fight going to sleep for hours and to wake up crying all night?

KeymasterI think what you’re describing is common for both silent and spit-up type reflux.
I think they are distracted during the day and then everything catches up to them at night?is napping ok? my silent refluxer could not nap…the showing no discomfort during the day might mean the medicine is working. when are you giving it? night is a long stretch to not have medicine…that’s why I say give some at night, too…January 9, 2011 at 8:41 pm #67530Anonymous
Inactivei think u have to use the caracream-z instead of bufferbabies…all the info is on that site…

InactiveI have corresponded by e-mail with Dr. Phillips, and he told me to get a starter kit and start Zegerid 20 mg OTC. Am I right that we can’t start the Zegerid until we get the starter kit? Also, does she have to be off the Prevacid a while before starting something new, or do we just start even if she’s already had Prevacid for the day?
You all are so helpful. She has slept (including her nap) only 6 hrs. in the last 26 hrs., and now we have hope that something will work. Thank you.January 10, 2011 at 6:45 pm #67534hellbennt
Keymasterkeep on w/ the prevacid as you switch…I don’t know about zegerid otc but I think you need the kit?
You need the Caracream for OTC zegerid because it tastes horrific. Dr. Phillips was talking about why you need MCS [mylanta cherry supreme]for Zegerid rx and Caracream for Zegerid OTC and this is what he said:The Mylanta Supreme with the Zegerid gives you the benefit of three different buffers with the Zegerid packet 40mg. You see, the Zegerid packet as well as the Zegerid capsules contain sodium bicarbonate as the buffer. Sodium bicarbonate is a great and fast acting buffer, however, it can cause gas as it neutralizes the acid. So, when you add MCS (or Tums) to a Zegerid packet 40mg or CC to Zegerid 20mg capsules – you get a blend of buffers so sodium bicarbonate gets help and the amount of the bicarb is lowered = less gas.

InactiveI just wanted to share with you that we had those symptoms exactly with our son with reflux. We’ve gotten to a place now where it’s under control and it has gotten better- so hang in there. But I did want to share that our days were fine and nights completely awful. People would talk to us as if we were crazy or confusing behavioral matters with reflux b/c his symptoms were so reduced during the day. However, after lots of research and finally getting to a Dr. well versed with the different manifestations of silent reflux, we were able to put it all together and properly diagnose him and address it.

InactiveThank you for your supportive reply. Knowing we’re not alone sure helps. What seems to have helped your baby?
